OM. family baS obiDalinittian named Duffer: We kuMglit Duff when I was only three years old. As you can imagaine. • Duffer has definitely become a part of our lives just as a, pet might be part of your own. As a pup. she was lively, sweet and very innocent. If a little mess was found in the middle of the kitchen floor, it wouldn't have been our little puppy. But, howeVer, as soon as it was cleaned up and she looked even the littlest bit guilty, the tail would go between the legs and she would crawl under the table. . bed. chair 'or whatever else seemed good at the time. As we grew older, so did Duffer and she is still riorund today. It's hard to believe how much sensible people can spoil their pets. A few months ago, the birthday of a cat was put in the birthday notices of this paper! I'm sure our dog is about the only one around that gets excited when she sees the big yellow M because she knows 'that a hamburger is in the near future. ' Just as people get babysit- ters for their children, many people get dogsitters fOr their dogs, catsitters for their cats, goldfish sitters for 'their goldfish and so on. Time and time again I have been asked 'to' look after neighbour's pet just as they have been, asked to look after, mine. en feeding-the-animacts; especially cats or dogs,' it is surprising how affectionate they can be 'after their "familY" has been away for a few hours. The reason it is usually cats or dogs is becauSe I can not see, a gold fish licking your hand or a canary wagging its tail al- though, it is probably poss. While working in a grocery store, I see many orders go throrigh my till with some sort of pet food in them: Often see six cans of dog food, four cans of cat food, a bag of kitty litter, flea powd- er, cat nip, bells for a bird cage, bird seed, hamster food and one can of soup go through on an order. One can of soup against all the other goddies for the animals. • Unfortunately. some people do not stop at dogs, catar-guinew-pigs. -etc.. for pets. Some people have pet cows. WW1, chickens, and pigs. A couple of days ago. I heard a story about a guy who Diked to take his pet pig around taws its the passeig- er seat dears. Oas day while on this IkBe. tam a peace- nen Mopped the car mad told the gay to take the pig to a zoo, The self the looliceamm mood he. pit still la the. pannier seat dt the at and palled the gay over agile. This time the policeman nOiticed that the pig was nearing a baseball cap. geolllosee end-had a' eigiik hanging out of his mouth. The policeman quite upset by this' asked guy why he did not do as he was told an and take the pig to the zoo. The man smiled and replied "I did take the pig to the zoo as yol suggested, and he Eked it so mut!). I'm taking him to the ball game today!" I guess that's the way that people are about their pets. On many occasions I have heard people or even myself saying excuse me to a dog or apologizing for stepping on a cats' 'tail. Some people have a good conversation with a pet just because they know that they will not be inter- rupted and., the pet ..411' continue to listen with an interested ear. I 'always feel guilty when I go for a walk without our dog or leave her alone in the house. Most people are this way about pets. A lot of people spend hours trying to teach their dogs to play dead or roll over. If they do it, they get a • nice reward and if they don't they get a dirty look. In other words. if a dog lies there whllb investment ,pet The death of 'a pet can alSo brinia, lot Of grief ahtiost as ORO as a 'member of the .4: *Wily can, which 'sounds silly but is often true. Recently. I was unlucky enough to see* cat hit on the highWay. The worst part of all was that the owner of the oat was with me at the time and saw exactly what I saw or more. It was a really hard thing for us to take the cat out to the vet clinic only to find that there was nothing tht they could do for it and that it died minutes after we got there. The worst thing about all of this was that the driver who ran over the cat carried on and didn't bother to come back to see if it was still alive and if there was anything he could do. If it were a person, it would be considered hit and run, but it was a cat so it was considered "too bad." A lot of cats, dogs, birds, squir- rels, skunks, etc., are killed on the highways and roads. It is really sad to see one lying there. Sometimes a driver can not possibly stop to let an animal cross the read but it is very easy to stop after you have hit it and see if there is anything you can do. • The longer that you have a pet., the more attached you get to it.
