If you happened to be talking to any of the St. Columban players in the past week and they seemed to be gloating a little: they have every right to as they defeat- ed' the top team. in First Division by a score of 2.0. The ,,game was the first round of the League Cup which includes all. 3 divi- sions. St. Columban was a little tense at the start of the game. but as the first half wore on they began to loosen up. They did an excellent job of covering the Curinga play- St, Coltunban-got back on the winning track as they completely out-played West Lorne with a 3-0 victory. The team got on the scoreboard quickly with a goal at the 2-minute mark on a well placed shot in the corner by Alex Harrett. Alex turned the trick again in the first half as he knocked in a rebound off the goal tender. Ernie Szabo finished off the scoring for St. Columban when he drilled a shot into the corner. leaving the goalie no chance. St. Columban could easily have won by a cis and did not allow any wide open scoring chances in their own end. The second half consisted of the best 45 min. of soccer action St. Columban has put together this year. They to- tally out-hustled Curinga and at the 20 min. mark Alei Harrett deflected a shot into the top corner of the nu t for a 1.0 lead. Curinga tried to press for the tying goal but were thwarted on every occa- ssion by the boys in green. Then with 5 min. left, to nlav Alex Harrett put a perfect much greater margin had it' not been for some superb goal tending by 'West Lorne't Notes: Richard Verberne and Brett Finlayson both played a strong game. The locah, played a very good first half. passing well and finally Michael Kelly put his own rebound past the Clinton - goalie. and a little later he scored again making it 2-0 for the locals. fn-second half. St. Columban appeared to sit back. while Clinton app'ied a lot of pressure. fism ever Kelly O'Leary kicked a long shot into the Clinton goal and a-little later Clinton scored two goals: Si. Columban was able to hold on. to win the game 3-2, -On June 30 the Atom A team met (heir match as they were overpmaered b% the Clinton team who dominated the first half and . got a 3-0 lead, In the second half St. Columban tried hard and finall% Chris Hoegy scored: however, the locals lost 3-1. Also on Wednesday Atom 8. travelled to Clinton to pla, the Clinton Atom B team to a 3-0 victory.
