in office..
Then came Lorne Henderson.
I have never met him. Like Will Rogers. all I know
(about Henderson) is just what I read in the newspapers.
What l read gives me a most uncomforable feeling.
"Don't contradict me," he has told his staff. In other
words, he has muzzled every civil servant in the ministry
because Keith ?inder of the foodland development branch,
gave evidence to the Ontario Municipal Board that land.

No one knows better than this veteran reporter that
politicians have a tough job. Cabinet ministers have an
even-tougher job. They are on call for many more hours
than backbenchers. They are under considerable pressure •
from many places, many people. Why anyone would want
to get into politics is beyond me. lieu' get into enough
trouble penning a little deathless prose every week. Like
reporters. politicians learn to, roll with the punches. They
get thick-skinned.
But when. the farmers of this country lose faith in their

I am sure that with that majority now at Queen's. Park

surely be waiting in the wings.

BY JACK RIDDELL, MPP
Libefal Leader -Stuart
_Smith was expelled from the
Ontario Legislature this
week for refusing to with-
draw his description of a
Cabinet Minister as "the
minister of cover-up" for the
financial scandal involving
Astra Trust Co. and Re-mor
Investment Management
Corp..
Dr. Smith said yesterday
he was prepared to be the
first Opposition' Leader in
recent history to be evicted
from the Legislature in order
to draw attention to how the
Government is covering up
the Re-mor affair.
More than 300 investors
lost their savings when Astra
and Re-mor collapsed. The
Government has refused
questions on the role. of the
Ontario Provincial Police in
the investigation. It all began
when Gordon Walker, Mini-
ster of Consumer and Com-
mercial Relations accused.
Liberal Leader Stuart Smith
of using "slimy innuedo"' to
suggest. that criminal_ dig-
ments were linked with the,
two bankrupt Niagara Falls
firms, Dr. Smith demanded'
that Mr. Walker retract his
statement. Somehow this re-
quest was not responded to
by the Speaker and the
debate became sidetracked.
In the meanwhile
not getting any satisfaction,
Dr. Smith complained that
Mr. Walker was a "minister
of stone-walling, a minister
of cover-up". This ,remark
caused Mr. Walker to de-
mand a retraction. The
House was in a real uproar
when Mr. Turner. the Speak-
er of the House," asked Dr.
Smith to withdraw his re-
marks, ignoring the earlier
request that Mr. 'Walker
withdraw the "slimy innu-
endo'.' tag. Amidst shouts
the Speaker said he had no
choice but to eject Dr. Smith.
after be had refused to
••withdraw his remarks. But as
the Sergeant-At-Arms went
to get Dr. Smith. former
Liberal Leader, Robert
Nixon appealed the Speak-
er's decision. The House was
adjourned for the vote on the
appeal. When the House was
recalled the Speaker inform-
ed the House that he had
erred by consenting to a vote
on the ejection of Dr. Smith.
He tried to appease the
angry members by asking
Mr. Walker to withdraw his
"slimy innuendo" charge.
Rather than having a calming
effect this further antago-
nized the Opposition mem-
bers. When the dust settled
Mr. Turner adjourned the
House because of "grave
disorder". The Speaker con-
sulted with the 3 party
leaders and consented to'put
the, ejection decision to a
vote. The vote was 55 to 44 in
favour of throwing hr. Smith
out. After Or. Smith left, Mr.

INTEREST RATES
The Provincial Treasur-
er, Mr. Frank Miller, has
stated that the government
will introduce a program
within the next two weeks to
help farmers who are faced
with a rising number of
bankrurcies. _No details
were given, but he told the
Legislature that the province
could afford to spend S50
million to 5100 million to help-
Ontario farmers.
;VAUGHAN REZONING
Debate on the Vaughan
,issue continties. Liberal lead-
er Stuart Smith has charged
that a Watergate-like scandal
is behind the activities of two
Ontario Cabinet Ministers
involved in the rezoning bid
by private developers for -
about 1,000 acres of land,.
from which they stand to
make nearly $900 million in
profit. Apparently it was the
developers' influence which
prompted intervention by the
Ministers of Housing and
Agriculture—long after the
matter had been referred to
the Ontario Municipal Board.
MISLEADING
"FINEPRINT"
The Government is to pre-'
pare a standard offer-to-pur-
chase form to protect home-
buyers. However, the form
won't be mandatory and the
Government won't move to
pxotect homebuyers from
sudden increases 'in mort-
gage rates. The new form
will be designed to replace
often misleading "fine
print" clauses in some home
purchase agreements which
end up costing some home-
buyers far high terest on
mortgage p than
they believed wo d be the
case. Opposition members
called upon the Minister of
Consumer and Commercial
Relations. Mr. Gord Walker.
to design a short form which
would lay out mortgage con-
ditions and possible loop-
holes. They' said offers , to
purchase which people sign
when they want to buy a
home. "should be" as bind-
ittg on one side as upon the
other, unless it is clearly
stated in the same size type
that the interest figure is not
binding upon the vendor."
GASOLINE TAX
Both Opposition Parties
attempted to force an emer-
gency debate on the new
gasoline tax, but the motion
was, defeated by the Con-
servatives. The Liberals
charged that the Government
will make ' -greater
windfall profits than origi-
nally anticipated out of its ad
valorem' tax. The NDP com-
plained that the Government
will make $100 a year profit
from every family in Ontario.
SOUTH CAYUGA
Last week, the Opposi-
tion Leader produced in the
Legislature a Housing Mini-
stry map . showing "MOE
_Ministry of the Environ-
ment) Preferred Waste Dis-
posal Zone-Dec. 1977".
marked on the site eventually
chosen for its liquid' Indust-
rial waste treatment plant.
He asked: "Since the Mini-
ster...apparently had this in
mind for some four years at
least. was it not just a farce
to go ahead with the Mc-
Laren report at a cost of over •
S400.000, pretending • to be
looking at cther sites and
having other interests in ,
