The role of the single woman has changed
tremendously in recent years. A play, such
aR The•Raiamaker, is evidence of how it used
to be.
Perhaps you saw The Rainmaker as a
movie starring Burt Lancaster. The setting
was a farm somewhere in the western United
*ivies on a summer day in the midst of a
long-rtinning rtrought.
The main character was a swashbuckling

The Rainmaker's happy ending was
typical for its time with Lizzie having the
choice of two young men.
In the early part of the twentieth century:
the only place a lady could go unescorted
without fear.of damaging her reputation was
the ice cream parlour.

Mimics a father's mingled sadness and relief
that his only daughter is marrying someone
just like him • someone to take care of her.
It harks back to the old theory that a girl
goes from her fathee,s house to her
husband's house, needing a man to take care
of her.
In today's world. there is a time and space
between the father's house and. the

But., it's good to live in a
day and age when opportunities for the
single woman abound-opportunities for a
career, a home, a rich and fulfilling life.
Fathers no longer need to bribe potential
bridegrooms. although some still think they
should try. And there are so many more
places to go than the ice cream parlour.

Seaforth has not had a
barber shop downtown for
years. but by coincidence.
two barbers from the region
have recently opened shops
in town.
According to Bob O'Brien.
the barber who opened his
shop on Main Street at' the
south end. both men investi-
gated the possIbility of a
shop here at the same time.
and even made final arrange-
ments for their property On
the same day.
"Bob the Barber." as he
used to be called in another
town, opened his shop about
four weeks ago. He has just
moved here from Wiarton.
His wife. Donna, and three
children. Terry. 1 Todd. 14
and Shelly, 10 are still in
Wiarton• but will move here
before school starts in Sep.
telpher.' Mrs. O'Brien, who
is a hairdresser. will be
opening a shop behind her
husband's later in the year.
Mr. O'Brien' started his
career in 1%1 after graduat-
ing from barbering school in
Windsor. He worked in
several places before settling
in his home town of Aylmer
to work for another barber.
Later, when he moved to
Ridgeway. he owned his own
shop for eight year. Wiarton.
where they owned -a- motel
and restaurant was the
O'Brien's next home. NOw,
once again. he• returns to
barbering and feels Seaforth•
is a good place to set up
shop.
Mr. O'Brien is a Legion
member, and is a past presi-
dent with the Kinsmen.
Seaforth's other new bar-
heels Harvey William Walk-

John Street. in the building
