Canadians. have always welcomed foreign ..ipital. I
suppose we should continue to do so, But that apital often
brings long-term and open-ended obligations such as
constantly repaying and then simpl% pa% tog-out all profits.
Author of the study done for Agriculture anada.
Pamela Cooper. said that instead ot spurring competition
berg, the clout of the fmeign 'act.
contribute to less innovation and lower producti% it% since
multi-national firms tend to conLentrate then' research ann
development spending in their home market.
Certainly, that statement has a heft% ring of truth as far
as Canada is concerned.
While I'm talking aboot marketing boards. I find - it
difficult to undertand why e%erybody is getting so uritight
about plans to slaughter hens to.c,,ut egg production in this
country. The market is glutted with eggs. So farmers are
simply laying off a few millinn workers: hens.
General Metors has layed off a few thousand wOrkei.s...__
too: and the price of cars has gone up.
What's so bad about laying off some hens?

Year's ago, the famous industrialist.. E P. Taylor who
organized Argus Corporation, one of the largest of Us kind
in Caaada, said he didn't'have to own a company te control
it In fact. he proved that even a 15 per cent interest Ma
company went a long way to controlling it.
That corporation has tentacles literally doz-ens of
businesses across Canada. It is no; famous for being
generous. But it is a Canadian-owned company. Its chief
executive officer, Conrad Black, is a former newspaper-
man.
'Because it is. Canadian-owned it may be a little mere
amenable to Canadians.
But the fast that foreign-owned companies control so
much of the food precessing industry is disturbing to this
long-time observer of the' Canadian agricultural scene. 1
was well aware that foreign 'ownership was high but not
aware it was more than 50 per cent.

foreign ownership, question is the best one.

these huge conglomerates. Only through marketing

feeder calves that will be in

While everything may ap-
pear to be going well to most.
the good cow-calf man will be

in his herd. Fee supplies
may be starting to run out
due to lack of rain and-

salt, minerals and clean

Flies are always a,problem
in the cow herd during the
summer. Prodacers should

After the breeding season
is over, a pregnancy check of
the cows and heifers should
be carried out by a veterinar-
ian. This should be done 40 '
to 60 days after the breeding
season is completed. Any
open females 'kept over the
winter will eat up a lot of
potential returns from those
that are carrying calves.
With beef prices at present
levels, an open cull, cow will
be worth over $600., and this
money could be used for
the purchase of more stock or
the retention of herd re-
placements from this year's
calf crop. *
