by a smiling receptionist
who will be your tour guide.
She is Gwen Richter. a
competent and frietillY em-
ployee of ARC and one of 69
mentally handicapped adults
who work there to produce
goods and services for the
Public.
Gwen accompanies visitors
around the Dashwood coin-
pies to the six program areas
and the bakery at the rear of
the building. She explains
how each program benefits

Gwen guides the visitors
from this area, over to the
wood-working section, The
Isom is filled with machinery
used by employees to make
lawn furniture, fish boxei,
burnt wood and routed signs,
ehildren's fain' tore and
many other quality items.
Since all of the merchandise
is difficult to see in the
workshop, pictures of all
products are displayed in the
ball. The wood-working is
available from AKI at rel-
atively inexpensive cost. The
employees are taught the
skills necessary to operate
the machinery and, as in
many factories, a board
announces the number of
accident-free days.
THEM OWN FISH
On the second floor, an
area is set aside for the life
skills program. Here, em- ,
ployees are advised about
hair and health care in one
departineet, a kitchen is
available for cooking lessons,
and another staff, member
coaches the adults on every-
day tasks, such as phone use
and sewing. One group has
purchased some fish and is
responsible for their care.
Jo-Dee Steele, an instructor,
feels that by caring for the
fish, by watching them live
and die; the adults will gain
valuable emotional exper-
ience.
Another segment of life
skills is the educatlpn pro—
gram. Regular half-hour ses-
sions are available for lEn-
sons In arithmetic, spelling
reading and . hand-writing.
"The lessons are valuable to
all employees for use in their
jobs, and the office staff
benefits from the training as
well Outside the classroom,
"good' work" is displayed,
and Gwen is eager to show
visitors her own items.
Gwen is employed in the
office program along with
several, other employees.
They do - a variety of jobs,
both for ARC and the general
public. They can print tickets
and bulletins; they do mail.

counts receivablet, complete
ledgers and payroll.
THE KrrCHEN
Next to the office is the
kitchen, a favourite area for
hungry employees and visit.

prepare lunches and coffee
breaks for employees and
cater to Oittilde group.
They will prepare preserves,
wedding cake. and various
fruit loaves as ordered. They
also provide a catering ser-
vice for small banquets for
businesses or clubs. Service
dubs are invited to have
their dinner at ARC's dining
hill, then tour the facilities.
The maintenance crew has
an office just off the cafeter-
ia. The crew is responsible
for ARC's caretaking and at
local industries, and some
housekeeping for private re-
sidences tind local stores.
Gwen reports the lady re-
sponsible for job placement
in outside firms is Janet
Hendricks. A visitor will
likely notice several em-
ployees busy polishing the
floors, washing windovis or
de.aning.
gyven will take the visitor
to "the South Huron. Bake
Shop where muffins, breads,
tarts,' and pies are readily
available. The visitor will
likely be tempted by the
sight and the smell of the
products. Gwen explains the
bake shop prepares various
cokes and pastries, including
birthday and, anniversary

After a tour with Gwen,
manager Don Appleby is
available to answer 'any
questions. He explains that
ARC, the Adult Recreational
Centre, is closely affiliated
with the South Huron and
District Associition for the
.Mentally Handi,Capped. The
•association was started in
Sept:.490404 aursery_for
children up to, age 11. The
nursery 1.4 still in operation
with nine children. As the
association develoPied, there
was need for adult programs;
thus. ARC Industries was
born in October 1973.
The prograiii receive ''
per cent sponsorship from
the Ministry of Community
•
Developtheatargimperceill
by the association,. The life
afkitls program Is completely
sponsored by the ministry.
The bake shop is not funded
by government, but is' inde-
pendent.
The association hires sev-
eral staffinemberrto super;
vise all operations and three
extra women have been hired
wider a government grant
for this year. Ms. Hendritlmi
Irene Okahashi, ARC'S mar-
biting manager, and Wendy
Hines, the public educationl
and awareness co-ordinator,
will be waiting with -the
association to develop better
• wisdom with firms and the
general public. ' Thor will
visit local fairs this summer
do promote, the association.
' The association sponsors
two residences in F4eter
where 13 of the employees
Eve, and also apartments
where another seven workers
live. The residences and
ARC have social programs
for the adults.
ARC has- a straps sports
prograM and one swimmer is
ping to the provincial cham-
pionships in Ottawa this
July. A. finer hockey team'
plays in Palmerston, Wood-
stock, Guelph and Windsor.
The adults receive a Feat-
ly Benefit Allowance from
which room and hoard is
deducted. They are, given
token pay from ARC for their
services which is earill911 for
