But I find the column has changed over the years. At first my column was basically giving people a chance to read something besides farm news, main events, sports. politics and other columns of interest. When I began writing it seemed to me that there wasn't enough in the Huron Expositor for kids to read. I tried everything under the sun to come up with ideas for, columns for each week. At first it was easy to think of ideas, but by the time that you have written dozens of columns, you can't help but have trouble finding ideas to write about or even repeat ideas, especially around hol- idays such as Easter and Christmas. It may be a bit of struggle but eventually with the help of • people at the paper and my family, I have always tried to come, up with something to write about. As I said before; writing -this column.has been fun adn , this column has been fun and a learning experience. After about the second month of ' writing .the colunn. it was suggested that I interview children with some questions of interest. There are many ways that a child may handle a person the kid is saying things such as "I found this particular performance extremely up- lifting and acted splendidly.' then l hear a little whisper over the line, "What else should I say Mommy?" I often get a laugh over situa- tions such as this. Once I was talking to a little girtover the telephone. After the interview was over. I asked her her name and age. She said her name and said that she was five years old. A voice on an extension phone pipe up and said -"You're sit years old now Dummy!" "Thanks Dad!" the little girl answerd and hung up!' HANG QUT When I go to the public school or to another "hang- out" for kids after school, I find myselfgiddenly sur- rounded by' Inige mobs of kids dying to see their-riame- in the paper and give me an intellectual answer. Unfor- tunately. I always seem to pick'the one kid in the crowd who will either give me an answer that I. can't print for various reasons, a kid with a lisp that I can't understand or some little sweetheart who makes an unkind gesture. at me. AT A LOSS Once in a while there will be a week when I am completely lost for an idea top write about in the paper. Once I went to the old newspapers from last year to see if I 'Could come up with 'any ideas and found that at the'same time of year last year I was stuck for ideas too _and- didn't bother to--write a column!
