Shirts, hats, socks, under- wear and other were kept in boxes, as clothing wardrobes and--BLsla cases were non-existent. Shit coats were turned inside out, and double piled,N.while vests 'and pants were stored elsewhere, The first customer for a suit meant that the piles werc. put- through a complete upheaval and had to be completely replied, a job that took time. Suits were -of the import tweed type and sold in the neighbourhood Of $8.00, complete with coat, vest and 'trousers (and, of course, no sales tax). Tailored suits, depending on quality of cloth, sold from $18 to $22. In 1902, Mr. MacDonald, like many of the present ,generation.followed Abe- call...... Ito make his fortune in the west, and his, interest was purchased by Harry Steward,' and the firm of Grieg and Stewart was formed. In 1904, Me. Craig sold his interest to Harry Stewart, and in October of that year, Charles Stewart returned home from Now York. where he was playing football and lacrosse, and was woikingin a real estate and insurance office. (He was also taking art courses.) Upon his return the firth of Stewart Brothers was formed. Despite the fact that there Were eight stores selling dry 'goods and' ladies ready-to- wear dresies in Seaforth, the Stewart brothers decided, to open _.a ladies departulent, complete with dress goods and trimming and all stand- ard dry goods lines, plus a ladies ready-to-wear depart- meat and a millinery depart- ment. A qualified milliner was brought in from Strat- ford, and a hat making department set up. One of the features or spring was always the big, Easter milli- nery show that attracted all the-ladiesnflowirand-count----- TY. DRESS MAKING A dress making depart- ment was. also established and proved to be very successful for many years, until the tr.ady-tci-wear dress in varied types and fittings, Wok Over the bulk of dress sales.
