Vitas WEI111/031 010 ED QAT? To the Editor et Titeeetnee t Dna yon allow me a, brief space be your cohiroa in regard to a matter CILIA i causing considerable etiscueeion amongst later worthy citizens just now, It ie being confidently affirmed that the Congregational church will hot affOrd eating cepaolty for the crowd that will gather to beer tho noted leeturer, Morgan Wood, on the 17th Met. Wheter it will or Pot of coarse will be best verified on the night of the leeture, in the meantime, allow me to say a word or two, that may reassure any who might be doubtful of being accomodated with a, seat if they should come. The seating capacity of the church together with other acconiodation that ean be reed° available for special occasions, is greater than many imagine. For ordinary services 400 ran easily be seated ; and for a special affair, such as that our friends in town and country are • looking forward te, 500 can be amply pro- vided for. Should the crowd exceed the getter figure, it would still be possible to give eigbt, seat and hearing to the comers. It may be asked, why was not the towu hell engaged as was the case when Morgan Woocl lectured on behalf of the W 0 T U? The only reason why it wan not taken, or at least the chief reason, was that so many complained of being unable to bear. Sev- eral missed many of the best passages of the lecture because of the bad acoustic properties of that auditeritun, Mainly on that account bas tt e church receieved the • preference for the coming lecture of the 17th. Asking the favor of insertion,. I remain Mchicloci7s. CE 1_ I, t_t1 r °TES. GOOD 113.ve Ntillon in Taxes, Until the will of the late Cornelius 'Vanderbilt is flied for probate it will not be known how, much federal war tax and how much inheritance tax to New York state will be paid out of it. It is probable that the surro gate will appoint an appraiser to de- termine the latter point, If, as has been rumored, he left to members of his family as much as $150,000,000, the war revenue tax alone would be 443,700,000. The inheritance tax due the state of New York at 1 per cent. would be nearly $1,500,000. It has been suggested that Mr. Van- derbilt may have made deeds of gifts to members of his fatnily so as to avoid the payment of so large a sum in taxes on his estate. If papers for such deeds were drawn some time before his death, and not re. corded, a question might arise as to their validity in warding off the tax, W.
