RESTRAINING YOUNG
CATTLE
Bartley Bowman of Listo-
wel swears by. his locking
head gates for young ani-
mals. It's simple to treat, for
illness, apply warble , treat-
ment to heifers or do a
pregnancy check. You simply
scatter a littlegrain in the
manger and lock the cattle
in. A' new., well , equipped
farm shop makes it easy to
make this type of penning.
Dr. Rae Fischer of the
Listowei---Vet Clink eirtipli-51.-
sized the value of such
facilities. He felt that man-
agement and facilities go
hand in hand. The chances of
conception are far lOwer if
you haVe to excite an animal
when ytiii are restraining it.
You're just not going-toget
conception with an animal
that's been upSet before it's
bred.
IS THE MILKING
EQUIPMENT ADEQUATE?
Dr. Fischer had encoun-
tered several • 'situations
where a producer had a
milking equipment problem
but didn't recognize it. He'd ,
used the Agr -and Food
Engineer at Allision as well
'eorrect a
that he really didn't have a
good milking procedure until .,
he hied to correct a frustrat•
'ing mastitis problem. Invest-
igation revealed: that his
equipment needed 'updating
and adjusting. He was also
allowing insufficient time for.
milk let, down and leaving his
Milkers 'on too long.
ECONOMICAL HIGH
MOISTURE STORAGE
We saw an economical
idea for storing high moist-
ure kernel corn at the farm of
Ken and Sharon Weitzel in
St. Easthopc township . A
plastic liner costing $90 had
been installed in a 12 x 40
open-topped silo. The liner
was held at the top by a
support. An auger brought
the corn out the bottom to a
small inexpensive Killer. The
roller was set to smash up
the corn very coarsely as the
owner -wanted to get away
from finely groutol feed. A
feeding could be processed
in a very short time. The corn
looked real good.
