the NCAA indoor track and
field meet as hoped. despite
a fine, freshmen start.
The shot putter failed to,
make the 59' 5" standard,
required to get into the
indoor meet in Detroit this
weekend. His iast chance to
make the meet.was in the Big
Ten championships at Col-
umbus recently. In that
meet, Nielsen finished fourth
with a toss of 58' 3". In
typical Nielsen fashion, his
best effort was on his final
-throw.,
Johnny's c(mch, Jack, Har-
vey. a former Big Ten shot
put record-holder, called the-
competition • at 'Columbus
"incredible, the best_ ever in
the Big Ten."
The winning athlete. Mike
Lehritann of Illinois. won
