amateur theatre in Scarborough that, was. putting on
Musical display of local talent: Their receptionist toldme.,-,:o.

the- show had been sold out for three weeks.
We .decided to try again. So, this time

York. we started-eut. Again. our timing was otT and we
arrived between shoWs. Following the previous night's
pattern, we decided to wait out the hour between shows in.

out! To Make matters syorse. there wasnI another movie.-

We spent , an exciting evening in, front of 'the
television.
On Sunday, letennined to salvage at least part of the
weekend, wedecided to explore the' flea markets; visions -
of bargains dancing inlronf of us. Junk , good junk at least,
proved to be in assh9rt supply as theatre tickets andinevie '
seats. In desperation. we ended up at the Village-by-the
Grange crimples. and decided to sooth our disappointment
-.With a nice, rich, dinner at Fitite Bon Bons, a little French
restaurant where the Menu and decor -is all in pink, and
• other Movie on the , bill.

night in Toronto is booked well in advance.
We decided if live theatre was out , we'd settle for a
movie. In Toronto. that:s now a hefty:4,00 investment.
almost as much as you pay to see real actors. on stage. So
by subway and Shank's mare, we travelled to the north of
the city. only to arrive betWeen show. We tilled in •the
. finishing-our relaxing snack alarms sounded es erywileic:
We made a hasty exit. and found ourselves surrounded b%
three fire engines, scores of men in blue and men with tire
helmets and axes frantically searching the iicarb
shopping coin-Files for smoke ,or sonic indicationother slat
had triggered the alarm which had drawn the entire..
neighbourhood to the'seene.
We firma), concluded there is ;isn't really a tire. and beat
a hasty retreat to the theatre. You've guessed it - the show
we wanted to see was sold out - so instead of watching Lily
Tomlin: as a `tiny shrinking housewife we setticc

There are times. I believe, when the fates conspire
against you. During those times. your prayers. no matter
how well-meaning, go'unansweredi or even° ignored and
nothing, absolutely nothing, twits out the way you've
expected. My recent excursion to Toronto prosedto-bri one
of those times - and adopting the ever-popular conspiracy
theory. I've come to believe it was revenge for all the nasty
things I've said in. the past about Canada's "Big Apple."
