I` Dungannon. was killed When the snowmobile he Was driving slammed into the rear of'a pickup trqck parked 'on Huron County Road I„ north of .Dungannon, That is not the entire list. Two Toronto •• men were reported missing • reeently when' their snowmobiles broke through the ice -on Lake Kainaniskeg near Bancroft. One unidentified body has been recovered. And there have been tither deaths in the province in the last month the result of snowmobile mishaps. ' Why have five area men, between, the agei of 18.. and 20 years old, died within the past_ _five weeks as a result 451_ snoyirmobile accidents?- Most of the accidents occurred when the s.newmobile. while being driven along the side of 'a road. collided with a parked Vehicle.. But why? Constable Eric --Posse. Community ,Services Officer for the Goderich, detach- merth,,of the Ontario Provincial Police, suggested, that a factor can be speed. Another factor Constable GosSe stress-' ed was that on surfaces not covered with 'snow,, such as'clear or partly-bare road, a snowmobile will not turn. "When they hit. a paved , explained Cons. Gosse. "ft (the snow • mobile) is not going, to turn." If the machine's skis do not have any snow to • dig into and push laterally against to turn the machine, then it will go in a straight path, If that straightpath is aimed toward a solid object, such as aparkiidear. then the snowmobile must either sitP, or hit the object. Constable Gosse told of one incidenthe 'witnessed recently which easily could have resulted in an' accident when two people on a snowmobile were unable to aurn it on a barepaved street. and nearly got caught in traffic. Riders who get caught in such a situ cation. because they didn't compensate -for the adverse road, conditions "aren't using common , sense at that, point", says the constable. "If you find yqu are on pavement... says the constable, "then you have to get off.".Tfie only way to 'manage to turn a 'snowmobile under this conditon is to get off the machine and move it so that it is pointing in the right direction. Operating a snowmobile, like driving a car. does' not mix with alcohol. Riding a snowmobile while impaired is a criminal offence: /Warding to statistics released' by the Ministry of Transportation and Commun- ication, 38 snow vehicle-related fatilities - were recorded in. Ontario in 1978. This figure dropped noticeably in1979 to 23 and in 1980 we've had five fatalities" in Hui'-on-Perth alone. Figures for 1980 are- not yet available, although the number of fatalities is expected to be lower due to ' the mild winter, and the lack of snow. Constable Gosse noted the O.P. has presented snowmobile safety seminars in the past_ including one January 16 at Nutlet/ Central School; He is willing' 16-- conduct more such „seminars if the interest is apparent among the public „and a requeSt is made. .' Organized snowmobile clubs. can take a lot of credit for promoting snow safety. - according ta,Mr. Goss. These clubs try to teach proper riding, skills and knowledge. w hich in turn creates an atmosphere of safety awareness.' .' In this s.nowbelt .region; snowmobiles should be a blessing rather than a. curse. Think safety first. as the slogan gOes or you, may' end, up on the list of statistics:_' Ran BY DAVE BRTIOME Every year it seems 'there is at least one team that matiages to're-hash the aged Cinderella'story. . The Rangers finished a distant fourth in league standings thiSseaion but last Sunday night 'the revamped - Blue Shirts,,, shocked the a Hawks by 5-2 count and pushed their round robin play-off record to 2.0.,. A week earlier the Rangers blasted the first place finish- ing Canadians by an 8-3 Daunt. The Hawks finished second. It may be a bit early to get • overly excited by their sue- , cess but downing the top two clubs 'in successive weeks is more than a fluke. Ralph, Wood led the Rang- ers by counting a, pair of goals.
