THE POLITICAL MACHINE.
Whilst the West Elgin revelations
are calculated, to sober the mind of
every one who desires to see our
'elections conducted fairly and honest-
ly, erre cannot help being amused at
the remarks of the Conservative
papers. They refer in assumed horror
to the "Grit machine" as an instru.
tient entirely unknown in the Tory
party.. Perhaps the most successful
example of the political machine was
that which for years was so skillfully
-worked from Toronto by one "Bob"
Birmingham. This instrument for
eighteen years was so scientifically
manipulated against the Grits, that
It vas only where they had been
hived. by the gerrymander that they
could carry elections.
Speaking of the hypocrisy of the
Conservative papers on this matter,
the Independent Hamilton Herald
says
"You world almost suppose, from
tlre comments of Conservative journ-
als on the West Elgin revelations,
that there was no such thing as a Tory
machine. Mr. Macnish's admissions
are pointed to as evidence of exist.
.once of a Grit machine whose bush
ness is to win elections—by fraud
and corruption, if fraud andcorrup-
bort are necessary ; and the world is
'`invited to join with the Conservative
journals in being horrified at such
wickedness."
The Herald further adds, and we
unhesitatingly subscribe to these
sentiments would be well for
Ontario and for Canada if both the
machines were smashed, And they
would be smashed if the steam-
Ilanxmer of the law could reach them.
The vital portions of the machines
are the then who control them.
When illegal practices can he traced

To Hog Raisers.
Many of the hogs shipped from
Wingham go to Collingwood and the
following circular to the buyers is-
sued by F. J. Colvin, of Stratfbrd,
win be of interest to our readers:—
Dear Sir,—Of late we have been
getting quite a number of soft hogs.
The reason of this is, we think, the
farmers are allowing their hogs to
fatten on grass and clover without
grain of any kind. - The resultof
this will be that the high . standard
which the Canadian bacon has at-
tained will receive a; serious check
from which it will be difficult to re-
cover. We have only to trust you
not to buy hogs that you know to
have been fed in this way and we
are sure that you would not if you
had any idea what a loss it means to
any packer. There is no better
way to grow hogs than by so feeding
but they must be finished on . grain,
such as peas, barley, etc., in order to
bring the top price in the English
market.
In future any .logs that we
detect that are soft and not finished
properly we will have to settle for
at a very low figure, therefore he
very .careful both for your own
good and ours not to buy the above
class of soft fed hogs from any
farmer.
",,,nneee Yours truly,
