age this week, owing to the farmers

The Beef Cattle Industry.
The acknowledged scarcity of well.
bred and well -formed beef cattle in
the country at the present time no
doubt accounts in a large measure
for the improved prices being paid
by dealers and shippers for the class
of cattle suitable for the export trade.
The lite stock market reports furnish
interesting reading for farmers and'.
feeders, and the startling difference
between the prices of well-bred
cattle for beef, and those paid for.
ill-bred animals shorrkl lead all who
read to eherish the ambition to im-
prove'their stook, and thus to share
in the be•It prices going, It is not.
at nil uncommon to note a difference
of 75 rents to $1 per cwt. between
the prices mid for a bunch of tsrdin
try ill bred butchers' cattle, averag.
ing 1,000 lbs., and that of a well -5n -

ished lot of export cattle, averaging
1 350 lbs., and a little figuring will
serve to show that, rating the former
at say 84.25. and the latter at 85 per
cwt., the difference in the value is .
just 225• per head ; 8250 on ten head
of cattle. or 8300 on a car load of 20
bead. And this way fairly he reck-
oned as. the profit of one class over
the other, as the scrub cattle 'have.
cost nearly, if not quite as much to
raise and fatten as have the well-
bred ones, to say nothing of the
pleasure and satisfaction which comes
to all, concerned in handling the
better dais.
