On the production side, it is as flawless as anything you could ever hope to see. The choreography is wonderful, the dancing and singing truly professional, and the staging perfectly suited to the intimate environs of the Avon, One minor fault in this area, unfortunately, is the acting. It is obvious almost right from the start many of the actors are actually singers who took up acting secondarily. For that reason, they exceed even the normal theatrical need for projection, many of them bordering throughout on the verge of overacting. The one case which calls for overacting - Brent Carver as the Pirate King - i. succeeds commendably. The Pirate King fancies hirtMelf something of a classicist, which gives him not only the right, but the obligation, he believes, never merely to enter a room, but to command its presence with flourish and style. His swirling capes and dashing demeanor create an aura reminis- cent of Errol Flynn. The other memorable performance is that of the MajorGeneral, played with buffoonish charm by Douglas Chamberlain. The dotter- , ing, slightly-crackers airhe brings to the part of Major-General Stanley recalls th 'char- acter of Dick Van Dyke 's grandf they in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (it' you'll fo we the mixing of the two realms of entert menu. Unfortunate- ly, these highlights are outweighed by an overall production lacking the elusive spark which, if present, can make these things work. It lacks accessibility. Pirates suffers from much the same fate as many musicals - an exceedingly flimsy plot. Granted, there's some fine singing - and plenty of it - but even the barest hint of a plot always makes a performance easier (and more enjoyable) to follow. It seems, however, that Pirates is perhaps a little worse off in this respect than many other, more modenA, musicals. But even among its own theatrical peers, Pirates appears weak.
