so big and all the players are still in the

skilled cameramen, color commentators,
replays and live interviews make the
Canadian Open an exciting sporting event. Of
course the commercial breaks.give you plenty
of time to stock up on refreshments. Without
sore feet, sunburn, or fighting the crowds you
can see it all.
However for the keen fan who wants to
experience the live action of a major golf
underway
Seaforth hosts a men's pairs tournament
on Wednesday, July 3 at 1:30 p.m. and a
good entry is hoped for.
Local jitneys are still held Tuesday and
Thursday evenings and ladies bowl Monday /
afternoons. New bowlers are always wel-
come. The 'men are starting their tourna-
ment bowling with a new bowler next
Monday evening and this will continue for
several weeks.
Good bowling to all.
a
event you must be there. It's an experience
like no other sporting event and if ru've
never been....try it! You'll return again and
again.
It's much more difficult than laying back on
the couch and letting Ken Venturi take you
around the Abbey. It takes planning to be a
successful spectator. After several trips 'to
the Canadian Open, The Memorial, and the
JP. G. A. I've learned a lot about spectating and
I've read many tips from the pro's wives on
how to see the .tournament and the pros the
easiest and best way.
Watching golf is unlike any other sport. If
you go to the ball game or the hockey game
you pay for a good seat, get comfortable and
watch the action unfold in front of you. Not so
in golf. You pay your admission and then it's
'up to you to find out what's going on. You
have about 200 acres in, which to find 144
golfers so be prepared to do lots of walking.
SHOES A PRIORITY
Dress comfortably with shoes being the
number one priority. Running shoes or golf
shoes are by far the best shoes to wear, but
often golf shoes are restricted from the
clubhouse so keep that in mind. Ladies
should never wear high heels. Golf courses
have some rough and hilly areas and a twisted
ankle can spoil the entire day. Your clothes
should be comfortable casual sportswear and
layers are best if you are not sure of the
weather. An umbrella is handy any day
whether it's raining or not since umbrellas
are great for warding off the sun. Some kind .
of sun hat, visor, and sunglasses are a must to
prevent sunstroke and severe burns on those
hot July days, If you are a burner be sure to
take a sunscreen lotion. Don't forget your
watch because knowing when someone teed
off and what the present time is can facilitate
finding the pros you want to see without
tearing around like a chicken with no head. A
pair of 'binoculars is great for locating the pros
and you can see much of the action without
being right in the press of the galleries. Don't
bother taking your camera or your-.transistor
radio since neither of these items is allowed
and you will have to walk all the way back to
the car to lock them in the trunk
Etiquette is important to observe while 'at
the tournament. Obey the marshalls, they are
there to make it easy for players and fans to
enjoy the event! They have a difficult job
dealing with thousands of fans so make their
job a bit easier by respecting their requests.
Remain quiet and still while the players are
making their shots. There is more than a diet
pepsi at stake here. Watch where yo I are
going and don't run, avoid traps, builke and
hazard areas. Cross over the airways my at
designated crossover points and if ou are
fortunate enough to be at the front of the
ropes kneel down so the people behind you
get a better view. There are garbage pails all
over the place so don't litter.
Decide who you want to see and what holes
you would like to view before you get there.
Once you enter the gates beside the visitors
parking area, pick up a pairing sheet. This
tells you who is playing with who, what time
they teed off and what tee they started on
since some start on 10 and some on 1. The
locator boards will tell you where the leiders
are and the Vantage score boards will tell you
just how keen the competition is.
FA VORITE PLAYER
You may want to follow your favorite player
around the entire course. You will see the
whole of the course but if your player is not
playing well you may miss the action. Some
people will follow someone for a few holes,
then pick up another group for a few holes
and continue that way. When you get a little
tired pick a goodyanttt point, on a knoll, or
at a par frwhere-376 ' 'd see a hole in one,
and take a rest, If you want to watch the big
guns it's recommended to stay at least a 1 /2
hole behind or ahead of the action. You will
still see what is going on without being
crushed in the galleries. After following some
of your favorites, spending some time
watching various groups on certain holes,
and taking a break at the refreshment tent
you may want to head to the 18th green to
watch the leaders finish.
At the end of the day you will be dead beat,
you may be a little burned and you still have
to fight the traffic, but believe me it you like
golf you'll love the experience of 'the
Canadian Open.
Just follow the 401 east to Bronte or
Trafalgar roads, head south and follow the
signs to visitor parking. Admission is $19.00.
Winners at last week's men's night were
Ken Daig Sr., John Janmaat, Marc Robinette
and Jack Price, Ladies night winners were
Lynda Huard, Jean Stewart, Marjorie Ander-
son and Leonore Southgate. There are plenty
of entries coming in for the ladies invitation
so local girls are reminded tp sign up early.
