Questions and commitments

missed A Team on another, hannel, without a

salute was important. It was interesting even

excess of the speed limit I was forced last
week to pull to the side of the road beeause of
the flashing lights of a Stratford police cruiser
behind me.
Now I'm not saying I've never had a
speeding ticket before., I have. It's just that
they've been few and far between, although
I've probably deserved a lot More.
But last week's misdemeanor marked the:
first speeding ticket I've ever received in this
province. Alberta police weren't as tolerant,
or maybe I should say, unaware of my driving
habits.
It's funny that whenever someone gets a
speeding ticket there always seems to be a
period of remorse. But, not over the dirty
deed itlelf, but over the fact one's been
caught committing it. I Went through a period
like that.
I suppose I should have known better. I
' certainly knew my string of good fortune with
the police couldn't last, but I was naive
enough to think it would.
In my own opinion, I'm a safe driver,
although I will admit my right foot is a little
heavy. I've had too many friends and
'relatives agree on that point for me to even
attempt to debate it, Even my sister, who I
never expected to make a comment,-did. She
claims that driving with me is like driving
with a race car driver and that to allow me
behind the wheel of a gear shift car is only
asking for trouble - or at least an interesting
ride. Yet, she'll drive with me. My dad won't,
if he can possibly avoid it.
People tell me I'm wrong, but I refuse to
believe there are no other people around who
squeal tires, without meaning to do so. I really
don't think it's a characteristieof my driving
alone, and I don't necessarily think it's a bad
characteristic, at all times: although I'm sure
it grates a few nerves,
But, getting back to the ticket, when I
became aware of the police cruiser behind
me, I, like most people about to be pulled
over, knew exactly what was happening and
most likely; why, Yet, in the extremities of my
mind I let grow the hope that maybe the

The 1985 A TC Product brochures from
Honda Canada Incorporated will be a special
one for Huron County. Honda Canada has
chosen Nulty Gully and area farms as the
filming sites for their 1986 Product bro-
chures.
A mbross Carr, a National advertising
agency from Toronto, will set up their
cameras for an extensive day of filming, from
the sporting aspect, to the agricultural aspect
of the fast growing Honda all-terrain
vehicles.
The filming will take place in the early part
of June and the product brochures will be
released in late fall .

he was pale in comparison to the old acts, no
pun intended).
"All these songs are kinds slow," was our
daughter's only slightly critical remark The
wonderful dance routine of Gregory Hines
captivated-her as much as it did her dad and
officer had something less 'disheartening in
'mind when he pulled me over. Perhaps he
really had no intention of giving me a ticket.
But, how quickly hopes like that can be
dashed! I had myself talked into the
Vossibility he wanted only to berate me for a
broken tail-light or a malfunctioning blinker.
But no such luck, I was speeding, and badly.
Since I find it necessary to have an excuse
for all occasions I can't let this one slip by. I'm
not to blame. If I'm a speedy driver at all' I can
me. Bill Cosby emceed and his low key
marvellously Inuffine humor strung it all
together. And even a generation raised on
gaudy rock videos can appreciate the colorful
outfits and wow, the earrings, sported by
most of the MOtown acts,
blame the whole thing on my impatience,
which in my opinion, isn't my fault, since it
was a trait I inherited from my parents, and
they from their parents before them,
Unfortunately though, I wouldn't dare to
ask mom and dad to inherit the ticket, or the
price tag that comes along with it.
Maybe I should've settled for the mon-
otony' of an automatic, car, and forgone the
gear shift, Naaw, that would've taken the enjoyrafit out of driving.
Webster from the TV show of the same
name was there - he was the only person our
seven-year-old recognized but we didn't.
Diana Ross was there too.., really it'd be hard
to come up with many Motown-style
performers who weren't. But at the end of the
magic three hours it was Stevie Wonder who
put it all into perspective.
OBSCENE W ORD
He talked, just for a minute or two, about
an obscene word called apartheid and about
the need for all of us to apply love for the
whole human race in our daily lives. He
talked about love as commitment, as caring,
for each other but especially for those who
will never be able to put on fancy duds and
show up at the Apollo. In short, for the
have-nots of this world.
In the fmale Stevie Wonder lead the whole
cast in a song about love. Everybodt sang as
though they meant it; tears were running
down some singers' faces,
"Why are they crying?" our daughter
asked.
Now, how do you answerthat one? I got out
a few words about compassion, about the
emotional high of doing something helpful
with old friends, about reunions, commit-
ment and pride.
In their very different styles and on very
different occasions, John Neville and Stevie
Wonder each answered that question better
than I did,
We all live in a pain-wracked world that's
worth questioning, improving and saving.
W e 'all can take part in that. Together.
This will be the last Something to Say
column for awhile. That's because of a
monumental change in my life. Soon I'm
leaving The Expositor after 12 years here
(counting last year's sabbatical in New
Zealand when I was with everybody in spirit,
if not physically). •
It's a tough, tough break to make, but a
necessary one because I'm going to try my
hand at something new and challenging. In
mid-August I head for Belleville and a job
teaching journalism at loyalist, a community
college.
I can't bring myself to shut the door and
bolt it. I love writing this column and I hope,
occasionally, to be able to write it for The
Expositor from there, That may prove
impossible because of a heavy workload in a
field that's brand new to me. But I'll try.
Meanwhile, to readers who seem like old
friends, to'all the °immunity people who've
been helpful, patient and fair with, me in
those years when I was reporter, editor and
general manager here and most of all to the
best newspaper staff in the whole 'country...
thanks.
I'll miss ya.
