Bank plays games with our credit
If you're like me, you've got credit cards.
You also don't read your statements that
closely,
•
That's too bad. If you did read theni, you
would notice - as I did recently - your creditors
are robbing you legally, And the government
appears reluctant about, if not opposed to
stepping in.
The central bank rate today stands at under
10 per cent. But most credit companies are
charging more than double that amount. And
some firms - such as certain department
stores - are charging as much as 28 or 29 per
cent.
That's outrageous. Those high interest
rates were set two-and-a-half years ago when
the prime rate was up closer to 20 per cent. At
that point, it was perfectly understandable
V for the companies to charge a couple of points
over that for theit own administrative 'costs.

The central bank rate is what the Bank .of
Canada charges the country's chartered
banks to borrow money. The prime rate is
t the chartered banks charge their best
.1rate customers. The average consumer
always pays slightly more, for fairly obvious
reasons - the bank naturally sees the
corporations as a much better and safer risk.
Even the credit cards available from the
banks (namely Visa and Master Card) are
charging and getting those exorbitant inter-
est rates. Do the banks really expect us to
believe they don't charge themselves their
own best rate? Most of this country's banks

The government is concerned about
getting /the so-called "entrepreneurial
spirit' revived in this country by encouraging
investment. Given even that dubious premise
(Canadians being among the world's greatest
savers), it would make a lot of sense for
Ottawa to step hi and do something about the
artificially high interest rates charged by
credit card companies. The less interest you
have to pay, the more , money you'll have
.available for the investment about which
Ottawa is so enthused.
Fora party which preaches free enterpriSe,
the Tories have curiously overlooked one of
that philosophy's main tenets: Wages and •
prices can only exist at a level the market can
sustain. 'But right now, the only thing
sustaining those ridiculously high interest
rates is the federal government's laisse-faire
attitude. And that's no credit to free
enterprise at all. .
