All were strong men and any one -wou'd have made a capital candid- ate. The choice fell upon Mr. THE RAILWAY'S LANDS Too, Iiolmes, and the geLeral feeling is that the choice was a wise one. It is If the retnt•ns of the free home ate that over 21,000 persons have - during the past twelve months, settl- ers upon their own humeeteads in the North west perhaps particularly fortunate that to Clintt.n falls the honor of being the home of the candidate chosen for the Commons. Clinton is the recognized pivotal point in West Huron elections. There Mr. Holmes lards solrl in the first. nine months has much influence, having been for a total of 1 fiS,400, for ,rayayor for the last five years. Mr. Holmes is president of the Can- adian Press Association, and presi- dent of the Huron County Sabbath School association. He is a son of Ir. E. IIolmes, formerly assistant j'i' ovinciel librarian, now of St. Cath- arines, where Mr. Holmes was Bern 45 years ago. Mr. Holmes' father purchased the New Era in 1805. If land the laid sales together it will stead entries are satisfactory the statement of the Q. P. le. land sales for the first nine months of the year are equally- eignitieant. In 1896 there were 48,21 acres of railway the st.11113 period in 1807 there were 114,496 acres ;old fur the total of' 383 81, while this year there has been sold up to the 30th September 288.392 acres for a total of ::130,97.1 so teat the tales for this year am considerably loot e than double those in the same pl'ricd in 1807. Taking the free homestead entries the by -word of West Huron, "As Clinton goes so gees the riding," is well founded, Mr. Holmes will un- doubtedly be elected. D r. McDonald, of Wingham, M. WORDS WORTH WEIGHING. . At the farewell dinner to Lord Aberdeen in Toronto on Saturday night, a gathering which will be- come historic, his Excellency gave expression to views upon more than one 'subject that will find responsive echoes, in the hearts of most thought- ful citizens. Having alluded to "the manifest evidences of abounding pro sperity on every side," he called attention to the fact that there were certain classes of public servants who were altogether too inadequately paid, and the juxtaposition of the two references was more than a sug- gestion that in times of prosperity the country should not be unmindful of faithful services rendered. The two classes that the Governor especially referred to were the Min- isters of the Crown and the members of the judiciary. With the wide ex- perience and trained observation of an Imperial statesman he observed, speaking of the former, "I believe that a proper sense of public spirit, a proper sense of economy in the best sense, would prompt. a larger provision in the way of stipend for the governors of the country;" and with reference to the latter class he remarked "t,s communities get larg er, as the circumstances of life be- come more complicated and varied, so the social expenses, and so forth increase, and necessarily there will be furthbr and further demands up- on persons occupying those high and responsible positions, and I think Success comes to those who persevere. ?f e ou take Rood's Sarsaparilla faithfully xtnd persistently, you wili surely be bene- fited. This wonderfully satisfactory showing ie no doubt; duo largely to the changes in the regulations affect• int,* bettlemeut in the Northwest whien have been made by the De pertinent of the Interior within the last two year's. There have been numerous important, changes made, of a nature which can only be apple - elated after practical experience of their working, but it may be safely asserted that the system ander which the country is being settled to dayi s more adv•! •3 ..rat genus to the settler and of greater paramount value to them than it ()laid possibly have been made ander the regula- tions previously in force. One change effected is in concee- tion with persons wbo have obtained a seeond entry for bands. It is not now necessary for such persons, to pat in the ordinary residence of three years or of six months in each of the three years, residence on the first homestead being deemed suflic- iene. So also regarding tbe home stead by sons of parents who ate also farriers, the, residence of the son with the father or Mather as the ease Inay be, whether they are living on the houneetead .,r not, so long as they are farmers;, is note sufficient to qualify the bon.
