Peter Mauldoon was the
very first coach the Chicago
Black Hawks ever had. It *as
a position that was at least as
tenuous .r ho '1" -idency of.
a bananan republic.
Muldoon guided the
Hawks to a third place finish
in his only year. For reasons
never really explained,
Hawks owner Frederic
McLaughlin fired Muldoon
after the innagural season.
As the firey coach stormed
from his boss ' office he
turned -and yelled "The
Black Hawks will never finish
in first place."
So the "Muldoon Curse"
' hung over the Black Hawks
for 40 long years, Not onceJid
they finish on top. Only the
great 1966.67 Chicago club
broke the string and finally
ended the infamous Muldoon
Curse. Now if you believe all
that.
How about own I.H.L.
Hawks. During the 1975.76
season. the teams first year,
they were 3-11-1. In 1976-77
the club was 5-10.1 and last
year the team was a poor
4-11.0. That makes for 12
wins, 32 tosses and 1 draw in
3 years of operation. Talk
about curses._th.is outfit...must -
have been hit by triple
whammy. The strange thing
is that these Hawk clubs of
the 'past had loads of talent.
This year's verson of the
"Blackshirts" isn't exactly a
Hellfire and Briinstone
squad but they aren't all that
bad either. Last Sunday
night they continued the
tradition of ineptitude by
bowing 8-0 to a fired up
-Flyers club.
Steve Southgate led the
winners attack by scoring 3
goals. Dave Longstaff and
Marc Robinette added 2
goals apiece while Ralph
Wood rounded' out the
scoring.with a single marker.
The Hawks -themselves had
num erous scoring chances
but couldn't finish off plays
around the net. Scott King,
Flyers netminder, made
several dandy stops to earn a
well deserved shutout.
Kings 12 Blues 4
Defenceinan Kevin
Henderson scored the Hat
trick, last Sunday night to
V"-pare'"'''S—Kitigs to a 12-4
victory over the Blues.
Henderson' also added 2
assists for an excellent 5
point evening. I never put
much credence to opening
night Matches because the
I.H.L. has a histery of high
scores for the first 2 or. 3
weeks of the season. Te
Royal boys completely
dominated the Blues in what
has to be termed a mild
upset.
Dale Kennedy also scored
3 times for the winners with
Larry Brooine, Clive Buist
and Joe Dick all getting a
pair of goals: each.
Ken Devereaux netted a
couple for the Blues, with Jim
lose
Sills and Jerry Barriager
adding single, tallies• it ap-
pears the King team May
have been slightly underated
while the Blues were just the
opposite.
Wings I Stars 2
The Red Shirts are another
team that is looking good
right now as they skated to
an easy 7.2 triumph over the
StarS during last Sundays
early game.
Bruce Rathwell led the
Wing assault by scoring 3
goals. Kevin Bennett pro.,
duced a pair of, scores while
George Reeves and Casey
Klaver added single.
Markers.
Doug Phillips. scored one
Stars goal. Jim Holland
scored the other goal for the
losers.
1.11.1. notes: The name
Black Hawks Fomes from the
Black Hawk Field Battalion
which owner Frederic
McLaughlin •headed during
World war 1. It looks like the
Wings, Kings and Flyers
may be the teams to beat this
year. There were 4 hat tricks
- scored last week about
normal for the early going.
