Naturally speakini Big game rifles By Steve Cooke October and November are the months when sane ordinary men desert their wives and families for a week in the .bush in search of the 'wily whitetail or the magnificent moose. The fever starts when the frost begins to be a regular morning sight and the autumn days are crisp and clear. Old clothes are hauled out once again, forgotten equipment is cleaned, polished and repaired.. and thoughts turn to the purchase of a new rifle. I would be willing to betthat more rifles are purchased during the months of September and October than in all the rest of the year put together. If you plan on ,bying a new gun this fall, put a little thought into it before you plunk down your hard earned cash. Caliber is probably the most important consideration. There is a wide range of sizes to choose from, ranging from such mild mannered cartridges as the 30-30 to the big hard hitting (:on both ends) magnums. If I'm asked to recommend a certain cartridge, I have to opt for one of the mid-range sizes. I firmly believe that the.308, the 7x57 mauser, the .270 or the 30-06 will adequately handle any North American big game species (with the possible exception of the big bears), and that anything less or more powerful shetild only be used if it can be handled properly. Action type is relatively academic and whatever feels the most comfortable is what you should use. I personally prefer a good bolt action to anything else as they have proven over the years to be the strongest, most .trouble free action yet devised.I often hear the comment, "I can get off more shots faster with a semi automatic than any man can with a bolt action." That may be true, but you'll notice that they never say "aimed" shots. It 'may sound strange, but with a very minimal amount of practice, a person can get off aimed shots with a bolt action, just as fast as any other rifle, semi autos included. After all this, I know I'll be asked. "If you were going to buy a rifle, whit would it be?" After looking over and shooting more than a dozen rifles in the past year, I would have to pick one of two in either .270 or 30-06. Those two rifles are the Tikka or the Parker-Hale. Both rifles are well made bolt actions that are simple, reliable and good looking to boot. You won't go wrong if you buy one of these, and maybe you'll get your moose or deer this year.. By Gary Gray Cam Doig fired three goals and assisted on another as he led the Centenaires to a 5-1 victory over the Tavistock Braves. The game was the first of the regular season for both teams. Tavistock opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first period 'and thats the way it Water Well DRILLING W.D. Hopper -'-and Sons 4 MODERN ROTARY RIGS Neil 527-1737 Durl 527-0828 Jim 527-0775 stood until past the six-teen miriute mark of the second when Wayne Parkinson put the Centenaires on the scoreboard with a towering drive from his right defence position. Both goaltenders played brilliantly throughout most of the game, especially. Lou Arts in the Seaforth.cage as he stopped several point blank drives in the second period when the Braves seemed to hold• an advantage in the play. The third • period saw the Centenaires come up with four unanswered goals to put away the victory. Doig started it off with a picture goal at 4116 as he took a. lead pass from Parkinson, went in along and displayed a fine act of stickhandling in drawing out Braves netminder Jim Zimmer and tucking the puck into the open net. Just over a minute later Doig scored his second goal with rookie Larry Dalton assisting on the play. The Centenaires kept the Braves bottled up in their own end, and after missing several chances Dalton blinked the red light 'with Doig drawing the assist. The Centenaires finished off the scoring with. Doig completing his hat trick at 16:36 on passes from Paul McClure and Dalton. Twenty minor penalties were called in the game with the Centenaires picking up eleven of them. CENTENAIRES NOTES:165 fans attended Friday night's game. The Centenaires have no fewer than six rookies in their line up this season. Ian Doig sat out Friday's game as it was his final game' of a two-game, suspension handed hint by the O.H.A. Rookie Larry Dalton looked very impressive in his first game with the Centenairres. This doming Friday night's game should prove to be .a real thriller as the always tough Lucan Irish come to town.
