Pet Peeves

by Dr. ilobl'dendsblp
Fish make very ge,od pets. They are
attractive, interesting and Can become a
very challenging hobby. One may Spend as
nruch time and money as one wants in
raising fish. They certainly can be cheaper
to maintain than an 80 lb. dog and very few
landlords and neighbours complain about a
bowl of fish.
As with all pets, disease can be a
problem with fish as well. In the case of
a sick fish, the patient an be put in a plastic
bag with water and taken to a veterinary
clinic for diagnosis. If management
problems are suspected, a hotise call by the
veterinarian is probably advisable in order
'that the aquarium be inspected.
• Management is usually a 'major factor in
raising healthy- fish. The fish environment
should be kept constant. The temperature
should be between 75-80 degrees F for
most tropical fish. Any sudden change in
temperature can be fatal. Likewise,
constant aeration helps maintain oxygen
levels between 8 and 11 ppm. Waste
removal may be achieved by charcoal
filters, siphoning wastes and changing one
tenth of the water on a weekly basis. If you
' change all the-water at once, replace it with
conditioned Water, This is water that has
been allowed to stand for a few days in
order for the chlorine to be dissipated.
There should be 1 gallon of water for each
cubic inch of fish in the tank.
a Often feeding is a definite management
problem. More often than not, fish die
from overeatine as compared to starvation.
Fish should be able to eat all the 'food given
to them in about 15 minates, Probably the
floating type o‘f, pellet is the best firod 'Or
most tropical fiSh in that it'doesn't settle qn
the bottom to rot before the fish 'get to it.
Live foods may be required fOr some fish.
These foodg are generally good !Mt there is
always the dahger of introducing a small
pathogenic organism to the tanicalong with
the live food.
Proper management is the best 'way tq
prevent disease from affecting your pet
fish. Another important-point to remember
is quarantining any newly acquired fish for
3 weeks before mixing them with your
other fish. If you are having fish die in your
tank, post mortems should be performed to
determine ihe .cause. Likewise a good
owner will observe his fish frequently for
any signs of disease such as: a change in
colour, bulging eyes, redness at the base of
the fins and around the tail, drooping fins,
erotic swimming, or a change in position as
it swims, '
Many fish diseases are treatable.
Treatment may consist Of simply a removal
of the cause of the problem or supportive
therapy such as an increase in temperature
or an improved feeding regime. Sometimes
it's necessary to inject the individual fish
with medication or to dip the fish in
medication for external parasitic or fungal
infections. For certain, as the number of
pet fish grows, more interest will be taken
in preventing- and treating these aquatic
companions.
