With the engine whistling its turbine:71*e . song at that speed, however, the car itself is moving at about 170 kilometres, per hour. The tachometer orange line is at 6,000rpm, bUt most 'drivers will shift earlier. The Datsun Is smooth through the gears, credit to a rewarding gearbox in the test car and alight clutch, but it isn't the free-revving winder that is the Mazda RX/7, Third will take you to 1,10kplutt 6,000, for instance, but its a long trip. No, the Z-car in its present form Is perfect for high speed touring. With its strong four-wheel disc brakes and predictable handling, it'ssimply a joy at speeds that would be a strain in ninny r2spepted automobiles. There really ought to be special high- ways for cars in this league, connecting major cities such as Toronto, North Bay, Ottawa,. King- ston and Montreal, open only to special!), tested drivers, allowing 1Strkph rapid transit. Ontario- b.ahns, If you will, a wonderful make-work project. One final bonus with the 280ZX: Despite a lot of high speed driving. including bursts up to 180kph, the car produced 36.6 kilometres per gallon or Z/.7 miles per gallon. Any normal highway driving with a broken-in 280ZX ought to produce at least 40kpg. HANDLING: Anyone serious about testing the Datsun's capabilities on sharp corners will want to switch to harder shocks and springs. The existing suspension compromises make the 2802X capable' enough, but lean too much toward ride tor the tastes of hard-line enthusiasts, Driven aggressively in cloverleafs and similar situations. the DaLsun's tail will sluice out, spoiling the driver's fun. The basic softness of the car also shows up in the remote clunk you hear when going on and off the gas abruptly at high routs, which suggests the rear end isn't as securely located as it might have been. The other side of the story, of course, is that the Datsun delivers a fine ride. And my experience was that the car was never anything but exemplary at high cruising speeds, crouching down on long swe ping corners at 170kpii. T e power steering (part of the GL package, you 11 recall) was a model of its kind at all speeds, ext emely light in parking moves, and Just right on ighway. I'd class it with that of I3MW, which Is at the opposite extreme of the no-effort, no-feel power steering offered by AMC and Chrysler. IN CONCLUSION: Few cars inspire 'as much conversation as did this test car, proof that Nis- san/Datsun has done a remarkable Job in finding new life in a design that fist allowed up here in 1970. "1 love this car, and I don't even like cars." said .)ac Holland, who took the photograph on this page. Horst Kroll, 1We CaPFA'rn rarer and mechanic, was-- more specific, "The smoothness of that clutch is jug incredible, I don't know how they-do IL" And 50 on. By DAN PROUDFOOT Datsun's 280ZX is to driving as Fred Astaire's sshtzsmwoveirnente dancing: Thus equipped, you can't . - Movement seems to be built into the 280ZX, not only in the styling's tinted lines, but somewhere at the core of the machinery itself. After a few turns at the wheel, you find you want to go traveL.prefera- blY a long way. More than that, the connort and Sensuality of the machine makes it an absolute necessity that the woman you consider the most beautiful in the world must join you, for this is a car that should be shared. • - So it Was that 1 found myself driving to Montreal to see the Grand Prix du Canada, a tripi I hadn't planned, but which became entirely logical when the 280ZX fell into my hands, The most beautiful woman in the world being otherwise occupied, my son joined, me and we took off hir Ottawa, Montreal, and wherever else we might decide to explore. INTERIOR: We were assured comfortable ac- commodations so long as we kept driving: We couldn't possibly have afforded such style in a motel room. The driver 'gets adjustable lumbar support for his lower back; the seat raises or lowers for. the comfort of the thighs; and of course the seatback itself reclines to taste. The stereo comes with a ..viindcrrfol little joy crick. Stir it around and the mix of the sound from ine four corners of the interior changes. Two gas guagas Instrumentation is complete. How complete is Complete? Two gas gauges, if you can imagine It, one regular and one broken into two-litre incre- ments covering the final quarter tank, which may be approaching information overload. 'fhere's even a digital report card to check at startup: "OK" it says, If everything is indeed okay with your various tanks and lights. Once Datsun's Z-car was a bargain sports car, but now its basel pA iso price Is and Sll1500 0 ls e a ndt tiuithecpapda car testeda to grand heresellusrifnogr s i car must be. The velour seats are not only comfortable, but plush in appearance: The fit of the Interior trim is exceptional. There's careful attention to detail throughout, and materials are of high quality, if riot especially rich. Lifting the price of the test car Is the GL optiori package, which Includes crake control, power steering, pow windows and the surround sound and lumbar st.,,Jport goodies mentioned earlier. PERFORMANCE: It the LturL X had 'Ay more, performance, I would not li.ive a driver's license today. I won't bore you with the tedious.detalls of -my-encounters with the Of'P while testing this car, It must be said,, bo,VeiTitr, that it is -easy and. comfortable to drive the 280ZX very fast. Not every police officer is sympathetic to this fact, The 2.8-litre, fuel-injected six cylinder enizine feels best at about 4,500 revolutions per minute In At Gerald's, we now have one 280ZX in sloth...Midnight Black, with gold trim; GL package, and floor mats...for $14,100.
