;This, summer I conducted a one-woman
campaign toslean up the speech habits of
my sixteentyear-old nephew. Dave. and my
fourteen-year.-erld niece; Janice.
They didn't swear, at least not within my
earshot, but they abused the F.! glish
language •,in othei4ways.
For a longtime, I ignored 'them •reaso, ij)ng
that it was their teachers' problem at'. not
mine. But when I noticed the , were
beginning to influence their si -year-old
brother, Brian, I decided it was time I did
something.
` During the summer, I filled in for their
'English teachers, correcting their mistakes
and trying to set a good example by using
proper grammar.
The following are at few of the conver-
sations that ensued..
Dave: "Me and Paul went to the shim ItYst
night."
• Myself: ''Paul and I went to the show."
DaVe: 'N-011 were, there too, eh?"
Myself: "Hoy,: does your English teacher .
put up with you?'-'
Dave: "He dOn't care. He thinks 1l talk
good."
Myself: "How do .you make people . understand' you '?"
Dave: "My friends understand .111(2, so do
other poeple. It ain't hard." •
• Myself: "You shouldn't say, aut•t.
Dave: "Oh, yea. Ain't, ain't in .the
dictionary, so I ain't gonna say ain't no more
. . . hut' ain't is in the• dictionary, you
know." •
Myself: "No, it ain't."
• Dave: Gotchal
Meanwhile Janice and Brian taught me a
few. slang expressions.
Myself: "Jan. just think, you're in high
.school now, Isn't it exciting?"
Janice: "Gross me right' cwt.". 4
"Look at tfiat new corvette over
there. Brian." •
Brian: "Detes•cent!"'
Myself: "Let's go for a ride in my car."
Brian: "Gross!"
I don't mind teenage slang. but "gross"
and "decent" don't sound :tit cx.presske to
me as the slang I used a hen I a as a
