provincial Plowing match
was held on Oct..31, 1866, on
a farm belongineto Gebrge
Cooper, close to what was
then known as Davenport
StatiOn on the Northern Rail-
'way, about-five miles,:from
the City of TorontO, ,
It 'was sponsored 'by •the
BOard of the Provincial Exhi-
bition held in Toronto, 'in
September of that same year..
The match was open to the
whole prnince. There were
five classes: Open to all with
entry fee $6; open to all who
had not • taken a first • or
second prime during the lait
five years — fee $5; open to
those using cast-iron beam
• plows -- fee $4,; open to boys•
under 18 years. of age that
had not won a first prize in
any former match fee $2;
open to boys whO had never
competed in a. ploWing match
— fee $1.
For y-three plows started
at a given signal 'at i1:15
am., and with the aaption
of three or four, finished at,
3:15 p.m. The fith! consisted
of 30 acres of sod mostly of
light, gravelly soil. A quarter
of an acre was assigned to
each competitor. The time,
allowed, was 14 hou'rs per
acre. Each was permitted to
use an assistant to set the
stakes.

A report in the Canadian
Farmer of November 15,
1866, goes on to say:
"A novel • and a very
agreeable feature of this .
