(Expositor Phoio) • 90 enjoy Topnotc Over 600 people sampled barbecued pork, birthday cake and ice cream, as guests of Topnotch Feeds limited at a birthday party Thursday to, mark the 25th anniversary of coming to Seaforth. Topnotch Feeds Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of James Richardson and Sons limited, of Winnipeg, came to Seaforth in 1953 when • they purchased the Excel- lence Flour Mills. Shortly after coming to Seaforth the main mill was badly damaged by fire ,but within months was rebuilt and modernized. Up until- ... the company located here, they ',had operated three feed mills in the province. Topnotch Feeds Ltd. today employ 14 men in their mill, six employees in their retail store and 16 employees .in the head office in Seaforth. In 1957, the head, office of the company'iv4S'ittri.044,'Io, SeafOrtirand aecornmodated in the former flour mill offices. . As the demand for-office • space ipereased, • the company purChased 'the former.W.J. Dune-an factory building frOm the town of. Seaforth in 1967 and ' converted it to provide head office accommodation. The building, which had" housed Seaforth Shoes before they moved to West William Street, had had a checkered career over the years. It was first erected in the early 1880's and known as Sharp's Hotel. By ,1883, the building had changed owner- ship, and - was now the Kennedy House. When workmen.demolished part of the building in 1967, they found the Kennedy House name still 'painted on the frame section of the building. W.J. Duncan purchased the building in 1913. Expansion. , In 1964, Topnotch Feeds lid., Seaforth entered into an agreement to purchase the grain elevators and facili- „ ties of Midlake Elevators limited in St. ThoMas, Port Stanley, Springfield, Dutton and Tilbury. The expansion gave the company branches inthese centres. as well as in Dundas, Milverton, Stratford, Kingston, Moffat, Dorchester, Brussels and Wroxeter. - Today.- the compan.y operates in_l_l_communitie'S across the province. The parent organization of the local firm, James. Rich- ardson and Sons, Limited, started business in Kingston, Ontario in 1857 and is the largest and oldest privately owned grain company in Canada.
