t'roke victims get help
Every year, thousands of
Canadians suffer strokes,
and while many victims
•survive a major storke, they
often are left • seriously
handicapped.
A new program is being
started at H.uronveiw in
' .Clinton to help stroke victims
in their recpvery program..
The aims of the Stroke
Club, which will operate as
an outreach program from.
Huronview, are to prevent
the stroke victim having to
return to hospital; to provide
a -social setting for the '
homebound who have similar
handicaps; to provide, a
structured exercise class and.
to provide recreatiional
activities which incorporate
therapy and craft.
The program organizers
hope the sale.,of crafts made
by members of the group can .
keep the Stroke Club self-
sufficient.
The program, which will
.be supervised by Mrs. St,
Jean, will be held at Huron
veiw on Wednesday from 10
a..m. to•4 p.m.
The program organizers
urgently. nee, volunteers to
assist with the stroke Club,
to oversee the exercise
program, or' to help in the
carpentry shop, or to or-
ganize recreational activities.
. Volunteers wouldn't have
to be- involved in the full
day's program, since the
schedule will he broken into
' different segments.
Drivers may also be need-
ed to bring members_•of the
club from their homes to
Huronview.
Lunch will be provided for
the club members during the
day long program.
Anyone interested in
either volunteering to assist
with the program. or 'in-
terested in learning DIgre
about joining the ,Stroke
Club, is asked to call the

Good Food at Home
Lately 1 seem to be thinking a lot about
food. This is my second column in four
'weeks on the. subject.. But why• not? It's one
of my favourite topics. .
This summer gave me a chance to travel_
and to sample the cuisine of different
restaurants: Of course; 1 ate my share. of hot
'dogs; hamburgers and french• tries at take
out windows,. but I also.enjoyed sitting down
and being served.
1 was pleased to discover t •didn't have to
drive far or pay. high prices to enjoy good
taxi, fast, efficient and friendly service and
relaxing atmospheres. Some of the best
places to cat arc close to home.
Ott a weekend in Toronto. though ' , 1
thought I'd' splurge on some high-class
meals in some high-class eating establish-
Ments, regardless of the 'cost. 1 recc..ived a
few supriscs.
The only .thing -that -was -high-class'about
the first restaurant was its location - on the
rtxtf Of a hotel.
• The sntorgasboard cost $12.95, •which 1
didn't think was •rn exorbitant price until 1
tested the titod. The salads were bountiful,
but they all had one thing in common • little
or nu taste. I've heard 'of crunchy rolls but
tlx: oneg that accompanied the salads were
,. just plain hard. •
The main course consisted of hot beef with
gravy, cauliflower and tiny round potatoes
that looked and tasted suspiciously. like the
. ones we can buy in tins. .
For dessert, 1 had strawberry shortcake,
think. The white cake was dry and crumbly;
it was covered with red -gelatin and had a
lonely strawberry pushed in, here and there.
Fortunately a bowl of juicy oranges sat on
the table and helped to wash downythe dry
cake.
The next night, at a different place, 1
ordered a $4 95 hbt turkey and dressing
dinner. It was not a lot to pay for a meal in a
restaurant, but it was a lot to pay for a TV
dinner, which is what it tasted like.
Although the room was not unusually
crowded, the waitress forgot to bring our
coffee. We becrnie•-•fired--of waiting and
ended up enjoying dessert . - • delicious.
butterscotch sundaes - at a nearby Dairy
Queen. •
The best meal i tasted on the whole
.weekend was a breakfast of •hot cakes and
sausage under the golden arches. Before the
two days were over -.1 resorted to ordering.
my old standby of a toasted bacon -sandwich
and fries.
i onjoy'eating out for many reasons - not
having to cook, not 'having to clear off the
table and not having to wash dirty dishes.
What a treat to be able to relax over a second
cup of coffee knowing I can just waik away'
when i'pt through. But I find it disconcerting
to go to a restaurant and be fed potatoes
fmm a can and stale cake.
The weekend in Toronto wasfrustrating,
but it taught me to appreciate the small-town
restaurants: around home.
What a relief to be able to order a steak
will -done and to have it cooked that way.
And what a treat to eat home-made apple
pie for dessert!
