A report to the board from Mitchell expands school program indicates that this year almost 19 per cent of Mitch- ell and area students are receiving their education at other county high 'schools and suggests that if no action is taken to reverse the trend. the Mitchell school may soon be no longer economically feasible and may have to be closed. The option of closing the school and sending alt Mitchell and area students 'to other, centres was looked at by the committee, but members of the board spent little time discussing that route. "I hope the board will consider favourably the recommendations of , this report," commented Trustee Ed Dearing. "I think we should do everything possible to keep the school viable." he' added, Trustee , Lloyd McLean expressed a similar view: ."1 c'an't even see discussing the idea of closing the schobl in a town the size of Mitchell. "I think it would kill the ,town," McLean said. The committee's recom- mendations arise out of a study it conducted into ways of keeping the high school a "viable educational unit" and was prompted by the steady decline, over the past several years, in enrolments at the' school. Opening day enrolment at MDHS was recorded last Tuesday as being only 503 students, 45 fewer than the number projected by the board in its predictions last fall. The committee's report• By Jim Hagarty Eitpansion of the facilities and programs at Mitchell District High School could take place-in the near future. The Perth County Board of Education decided last Tues- day to pursue the suggest-' ions of an ad hoc committee which favours adding some technical and trade courses to the school's program options. The move is designed, as an effort to stop the flow of Mitchell and area students to the Stratford high schools which currently offer courses Guests at the Topnotch party Over 100 often Foresters picnic • • • • • 00000 ... .. ..... ..... • • 41; • • • • • , • • • : • • unavailable at Mitchell. Course areas recom- mended by the committee include technical shop programs, 'boys' occupations and art. Any such widening of course offerings would, according to the committee, result in the need to re- design the existing facilities at the school and add some new ones. irettor Business • Correspondent Mrs. Mary Merrier 482.7143 The Foresters picnic and barbequc was held on Sun- day at the hail with about 100 people attendingGanics were held during the afternoon with the following winners. -Races 6 and under: Kenny - tiOs.
