You won't get rich racing frogs, but it's
_ almost guaranteed you'll get very tired.'
It seems the secret of racing our little
amphibian friends is to blow the down the
race course.
On Friday afternoon, at Seaforth Public
School, a number of frogs hopped, crawled
and sometimes almost flew to the finish line
ill..the. second annual frog derby sponsored
by the recreation department.
Derek Cooper and his green and brown
striped frog managed to capture the trophy
when they won the final heat of the race, but
not before Derek did a lot of blowing,
While ,specatators could only guess how
the frog' felt when he, finally crossed•qhe
fmish • line, ' Derek himself didn't leave
anyone in doubt. After letter otil all that hot
air, he was exhausted.
Or, 'as another contestant said . when he
and his frog finally reached the etid of the
line - "Oh, my aching head."
The runners-up in' the derby were frog
owners Cathy Lyn Vander, Velden and
Steven Vander -Velden.
Toads?
In addition to a number of green and
brown models entered in the race, a number
of derby contestants brought along creatures
that looked suspiciously like toads, but derby
organizers didn't seem to Mind.
Troy MacLeod's entry in the race was so
small, every time '1'roy blew On the little
creature, it 'toppled over completely. It's
doubtful if the little garden toad ever did see
the, finish line.
• The rules of the derby were quite. S'iinply,
"Don't squish the frogs" and "rush the
dehydrated little creatures back into ''the
water as soon as the race was over:
But even with these pointed instructiafs,
a nubmer of the frogs probably .raced their
last race tn Friday afternoon.
In , one tragic episode, one of the
competitors leaned back to blow on his ,own
frog, and crushed his. opponent's entry in the
process.
But while , the collection of frogs
(ExpositorPhoto)
assembled for • the derby was a • varied ..one,
variety didn't stop with the amphibians.

what to feed her new pet, since the question
really hadn't arisen yet. •
But, despite this major drawback, she

After all, he'd just brought her a red ribbon.. -
