Columban 'Has visitors from Alberta 1 Students from Huron County attending the three week summer school session at S Patrick's .separate School, Dublin are combining learning with fun. The students, who are bussed in daily from as far away as Wingham, Goderich and Kingsbridge, as well as Seaforth and St. Columban, are reinforcing. skills they learned during the school year, The aim of the summer program is to create contintiity in the learning experience. David Zyluk, principal of the summer program, said some students are scholasti- cally capable but may be having trouble with motor skills. Other studnets are enrolled in the program so they won't find it difficult to re-adjust to schoolwork when the vacation ends. The summer program at St. Patrick's not only helps the children with academic skills such as language and mathematics but also with motor development through physical education. Last Monday, students at the schop1. were visited by James Roy..and Steven Thbrne of the Blyth Summer Festival who taught individual acting skills to the students. On 'Wednesday, the students challenged ,teachers and instructors at the school to a basketball game during noon hour. Last Friday, the teachers' team narrpwly defeated the student's by a score'of,16-12 in a four inning softball game. On friday, August 18, students will have chance to trying something else that's alittle different - a physical education lessen with a parachute. My Zyluk, . said the' parachute chord is removed from the parachute, on loan for the session from Elborn Teachers' College in London. By working with the parachute, instructors hope to improve' the children's concepts of -directionality - by -helping the children understand the meaning of up and down, of left and right and concepts like forward and backwards. The parachute will 'also be used 'to help"- students with locomotion skills such .,as walking, running and leaping. Mr. Zyluk said St. Joseph's School in Kingsbridge and St. Anthony:s. School in Kincardine both use parachutes in their physical education exercises during the year since the patachute lets children learn by experience. On Monday, August 21, the school.wi.11 be holding a playday, involving events like sack race, floor hockey and .othe team partici- pation events. My Zyluk said the purpose of the day is to let the students have fun while they're exercising. The final event of the three week session will be an awards day held on Wethiesday August 23 at 2 p.m. when students receive recognition for, sports and' individual achievements during the simmer session. After the session is over, teachers and instructors will be' Spending.,,AL additional period evaluating .the, success of the program. in Brodhagen. Mrs, Jean Van Drunen.
