Beth is employed at the Midwestern 'Regional Centre at Cedar Springs. She is a grand- daughter of Mrs. Alice Agar of Seaforth and Mrs. Jessie Keyes of Varna. It's. not easy being an honour student. And as far as officials at Seaforth District High School know, the -local school is the only one in the county which recognizes that fact with an annual honour banquet.'- No one can remember for certain how long the banquets have been held at SDHS, School secretary jean Hildebrand can only ' find records back to 1961 but others understood that the banquet held this June was the 20th such event. Former SDHS principal Larry Plumsteel startepl the .banquet., for honour students and tileir parents because he and teachers felt there was 'more recognition for top athletes than for students who did well academically. "And after all, that's the main function of education," he says. Whether it reflects higher marks or .brighter students at SDHS, 34 kids fifforiqed the 1961 honour banquet. comp. Parents a raw aced with 82 in June 1970. In the 18 years for which SDHS has records, the school has had 890 honour students. "We hoped the parents looked forward to it and the students too," Mr, Plumsteel recalls. Two Seaforth parents attended SDHS's honour banquet for 18 consecutive years. They are Betty and Art Devereaux, who according to Mrs. Hildebrand's calcul- ations have been at every honour banquet with one offspring or another since at least 1961. Louis, now a dentist in Sarnia is the oldest in the family and was the first honour student, The couple attended their fast high school honour banquet this year, when Claire, their youngest child grad- uated. • ' in between Mr. and -Nita.. She said many have the misconception that 4-H is for rural people only but it is for people who live in citiesp towns and hamlets as well. She said there are many projects that boys can take as, well as girl 'and that OMAF is also trying to expand the program so that more of the family members of an individual taking a club are aware of what's going on. Miss McClenaghan said enrolment or lack of it didn't have much' to do with the proposed changes since enrolment fluctuates anyway. Since leader workshops don't start until the middle of August for the first project, Essential Edibles, Miss McClen ,aghan said home economists won't 'be able to cif gelling the 4-H chit's' together 'and are always interested in getting new leaders _ ‘1IIII and having new clubs formed.
