3-1 early in the 2nd half on a hard
Shot from 10 yards. Goalie Frank
Verberne had his hands on the
ball but couldn't stop it alto-
gether. In the last 15 minutes
Columban had several glorious
opportufiities to get back into the
game but were unable to g.et the
ball over the line.
All in• all, it was an extremely
well played game on both sides. If
St, Columban continues to play as
they have in their b last 3 a1 4'
games they will have moved well
up in the standings by the end of
the year.

Pe hihg off a dock can be. a lot of fun and
can rovide some healthy entertainment for
Children of all ages. The yellow bellies, as they ,
are often referred to, inhabit ma` often
throughout Ontario and are fairly 'easy to
catch. • All kids like to catch •fish, ane they
generally don't care what kind or how big they •
.are. Perch are-abundant, and if there's. lots pf
action, it may be. difficult to pry .:yd'ur
youngsterS free' of the dock to tak e them.
home. The fact that perch are deliciouS is an
added incentive to "fill that stringer".
One of the nice things about perch, fishing is
that no specialized equipment is needed.• Any
type of fishing pole.from the old bamboo cane
to your most sophisticated spinnkg_outtit will
do. The most common setup used consists of „.
two hook s ancLan extra large sinker. Tie the
sinker on the line with the two hooks spaced
out about one and. a half feet apart and the
same .distance above the 'sinker. Bait up with a.
worms or minnows and you're in business.
Some people prefer to hook their minnows
through the lips, but I have always had better
' luck hooking them. through the back just
uhderncath thedorsalfin. This seems to allow
•
Yellow perch:
the perch. to 'take the 'bait better, and, insures
more hits than misses, When using worms,
I've had the best luck just using a piece about
one inch long that covers the point of the
hook well.
The rig can be fished either using a "tight
line'' or a "slack line". If a tight line is used,
every, tittle tap and nibble can be felt. The
slack line also produces fish, but the perch
seem to-take-and-swallow the bait resulting in
more firmly hooked fish'. This' makes it easier
for, the youngster to land his fish, but it also
reduces the possibility ofireleasinK•undersized
fish. If the novice fisherman feels secure using
a bobber, by all means use 'one. The bobber ,
gives the youngster something to watch and is,
a good indicator of bites. USe the same double
hook setup, but keep as Much line out as is
possible below the float.
one last tip. If the fish are biting well and
you are looking for a little more action, try
fishing with a small Mepp's spinner or small
spoon. The lure often singles out the larger
fish. and a one pound perch can be pretty
scrappy on the end of a long line.

The ST. Columban "B" soccer
team came up against 'a much
stronger. opponent. than was
expected last Sunday and ended
upon the short end of a 6.3 score.
Although losing by thre6 goals,
St. Col.,Noban played well, the
differek-e being the very strong
forward line of London. This is
evident from the fact that the
"B" team had not allowed more
than 1 goal in any' game this
season prior 'to Sunday.
Curinga held a 3.0 lead at one
time but St. Columban came back
with goals by Joe Claessens and
Danny Murray to come within
one. However, Curinga kept
passing the ball up. to their fast
and talented front line and
eventually restored their lead.
Joe Claessens scored his second
goal ,of,. The, game in the final
minutes to make the final score
6.3.
Stratford-3; St. Columban A-1
AS with the "B" team, St.
Columban "A ' played their
toughest opponent of the year as
F.A.G. Stratford 'showed 'why
they are on top of the 2nd
Division. They have a very well
balanced club and an extremely
fine forward in Mike North, a
player who has to constantly be
watched. _Rick Ryan put St. ,
Columban into the lead after 15
minutes when he headed in a
perfect cross from Tony Arts...'
Stratford began to increase their
pressure though and by halftime
had assumed a 2.1 lead. Both
goals came on hard low drives
just inside the' post.
Statford increased ,their lead to
