When Joseph Kidd. at Carronbrook. now
Dublin, sunk his first salt well he found the
brine was too_rweat,„. He then purchased
land,on Lot, 5. Concession I. Todcersmith,
James Dorsey. Peter MeEWen had
the contract to do the drilling in June.
•
187-1. Here brine of it much better quality
was found. However, the wooden pipes
soon gave way under thepressure used to •
force it to its destination five miles. away.
These were replaced by iron piping at a
cost of 51.000 a mile. Heavy business
losses forced Kidd to 'fold up this business
•
and everything was sold' at his estate sale
in Toronto in September, 1880. Fifty years
later those cultivating the land could -rdeteet
where the %veil had been as the horses' feet
sunk deeper 'there than any other spot. in
the field. Since 1950 the c' _Hydro electric
Power has owned part of this
Lot and has erected la.r .ge transformers to
supply its higher and higher powered lines
through the years. Since 1970 this-has been
the operations centre of this district.
