Lea S an ue tightens
By Bob Dinsmore
The men's Industrial Ball
league has tightened the stand-
ings over the last' two weeks as _
last years weak teams have come
on strong and are showing just
how close things are this season.
Last week's scores saw the Turf
Club continue to lead the league
as they hung on for an 8.7 victory
over the winless Firemen. The
second game saw Mainstreet
come up big whipping the Texaco
nine, by a 9.-3 count.
Monday's %scores saw the Vil7
lage hand on for a narroW 6-4 win
over the Travellers while the
Queens whipped the Teachers
9-I.
This 'week's action saw the
TeacherS get back on the winning
track as• they dominated play and
whipped the Firemen by a • 1313
count, ..The Teachers collected 9
hits including a home run by Gus
Feeney and a buses loaded triple
by Gary Nicholson while the
Firemen managed just five hits
with Don Colemen's triple and
13111 Salisbury's double the only
extra base hits.
The second game proved to be
exciting as the Turf Club built up
a big lead then hung on for a •
narrow 10-9 win over the Main-
street squad. The Turf taking
advantage of early inning mis-
takes and weak hitting built up a
10.•2 lead and looked. like 'easy
winners.
Mainstreet came back with a
big 5 run fifth inning and rallied
in the sixth for another run to
narrow the gap to 10-8. The final
inning saw Mainstreet again try
to rally and managed a single run
but heads up fielding plays left
the tieing run-on third as the rally
fell short leaving t he Turf Club
victorious.
Monday's games proved to be

the most exciting this season as
the Queen's built a big lead on
some fantastic fielding plays then
struggled to hang on for a 16.11
win over the Traveller.
The Queens opened a quick 6M
lead in the first inning on 4oubles
by Jerome Aubin and Jerry
Hetherington.
Then with. their first double
play of the night snuffled out., a
Trayellers rally. The second saw
the Queens again pull off a double
play to again put the damper on a
Traveller uprising. The third saw
the Queens add a single run on
Bill Ktintz's 'triple but t he' Travel-
lerS rallied to hit the scorebOard
as a single by Perry Broome
pushed across two runs.
The fourth inning saw, the
Travellers get another run' but
again the Queens executed their
third double play to stop the rally.
In the fifth a single marker moved
the Queens up 8-3 and a triple
play, the leagues first, saw the
Queens again stop a Traveller
threat.

Sixth
The sixth inning saw both
teams forget about their earlier
outstanding plays as the Queens
added 3. runs to their total lead by
Ray Klaggis 'triples. Then the
Travellers sent 14 batters to the'
plate pushing across 8 big runs as
• gena=-13rcrorne. nand :Scott '-King.-
doubled and combined with er-
rors tied the game at 11,a piece.
The final inning saw the Queens
again get thick bats working and
Bill Kuntz's triple led them to 5
big runs' and a 16-11 ,lead. The
Travellers failed. to rally, as they
dropped their fourth decision,
Despite Score -
The Queens despite the score
played excellent fielding baseball
setting a league record with 3
double plays and a startling triple
play. The win also moved. the
Omens int6 a first place-tie with
the Turf Club. . . .
The late game also proved very
exciting as a pitchers duel ended
in a 3-2 victory for the Texaco
Duffers over the Village. The
Village opened a 2-0 lead in the
third inning on a double by Ralph
Woods and Bill Price's single.
The ,Texaco nine narrowed the
gap to -1 run as Bob Friendship
'tripled then tried to stretch it to a
home run but failed leaving the
Village up 2-1. The sixth inning
saw Te xaco rally for 2 runs and
the lead as a double by Bob
Dinsmore and singles by Ben
Akker and Gary Finnigan
provided the power. The Village
than left the tieing run stranded
. on- third bate as the Duffers
edged out t , win. !
This week s scheduled games

Remember when irrepressible
Harold Ballard 'sent his Toronto
Maple Leafs on an impromptu
'vacation last Spring.? The hockey
_club had been reeling under an 8
game lesing streak and he figured
a much •needed rest might ,be the
right, medicine to pep up theeafs
sagging 'fortunes. . • '
Well, the crafty Ballard moved
right in 'his reasoning as the
Terontoniaps roared back north
and knocked. off the • heavily'

Semi-Finals. However,. Montreal
owed that the vacation may not
have been long 1 nough. They
whipped the Leafs 4-0 before
going on to capture a 3rd straight

The Seaforth Industrial
Fastball League has a 'similar
story to tell but not quite on the
same scale as Toronto's. -
Second Spot
The Queens Hotel • are
currently seeded in second spot in

mere coincidence that the Yellow
shirts. recent win streak started
with the return of Dennis
Campbell to the line up.
Campbell has just, returned
(tom a six week European
vacation and his Queens ball team
has won 5 straight thatches since
his insertion into the line-up.
Looking fit 'and considerably
lighter Dennis was asked how he
felt about playing his first .gaMe.
"1-feel pretty-good-right now. I
kept in shape by doing a lot of
walking and stayed away from the
rich European food."
Dennis got 3 hits and drove in 3
runs in that initial game and I'
asked if he did anything special.
"I don't think so. I was just ready
to play and things fell into place
early."
Asked how he feels the
Queens will do this year,
Campbell replied, "I think we
look tough. We have a solid
outfield, good pitching and the
infield is playing error free ball. If
things go well the Queens can
