Dave O'Reilly and Rick Ryan ,
Scored 2 goals each to lead St;
Columban "A" to a 5.0 victory
over St. Thomas on Sunday. The
5.0-score was a good indication of
the play St, Columban
controlled the game for
practically the whole 90 minute's
of play.
This was a first round game for
the 2nd Division Cup and does not
count in their regular league
standings. However, St. Thomas
had defeated St,-Cohtmhan,.. o 000 1
in the first league game of the
year, so the convincing victory on
Sunday shows a great improve-
ment in the play of St. Columba
and should give them confidence
for the upcoming games. ,
O'Reilly put St- Columban into
the lead at the 10 'minute mark of
the 1st half as he scored on a
pi nalty-shot...Ms. low shot to the
right corner was ti'little soft and
the St. Thomas goalie appedred to
have it stopped. However, the
ball went • under him and
continued into the net.- Paul
Coyne upped the score to 2.0
before halftime as -he broke into
the clear and made no mistake on
his low shot from 6 yards out.
St. Columhancaine out just as
strongly in the 2nd half and were
rewarded 5 minutes later when
Rick Ryan scored the nicest goal
of the game. He clearly beat the
fullback guarding him, broke in
from the left wing and fired a
hard shot jugt inside the far post.
O'Reilly increased the lead to 4-0,
again On a penalty shot. This time
he gave the goalie no chance to
get to the ball as his shot went
into the top right corner of the
net. Ryan completed the scoring
for St. Columban when his free
kick from 20 yards out deflected
defender,
Again
net off . a , St. Thomas
Again this
Columban
strongly and goalie Frank
Verberne was very solid in net as
he turned in another shutout.
There are no league games
scheduled for this coming long
weekend but both the "A" and
"B" teams • return to action the
following week.
