The Huron Expositor, 1978-06-29, Page 8money which could be split if
more .than one child worked on
one poster.
It turned out that some posters
were done by two or,three pupils
' which, in itself, was a lesson in
learning to work together in a
group.
I thoroughly enjoyed the whole
'evening and' am most grateful to
those who made it all possible. ,
During the evening the .door
prizes were given to thoSe '.who
had the lucky numbers. A lovely
planter was also given to ,•„the
person who held the lucky
number for it.,
° The evening closed with a
coffee . break and social time
which I always enjoy. The speaker
gave her audience a timely
warning; when gathering any of
the wild plants check and made
sure there has been no spraying
in the area. One might be
tempted to pick elderberies or
other wild..fruits which might be
contaiminated 'by spraying.,

The conibined efforts of some
of my friends in the Horticulture
'Society made it possible for me to
attend the special-meeting. when
Mrs. Blanche Po,*nall Garrett
Goderich. was guest speaker, Her
topic was "A Taste of the Wild."
which has become a widely-
studied hobby of hers. I was
invited to dinner, and my hostess
kindly drove me to this meeting.
To tickle our taste-buds the
speaker had samples of ,tier.
recipes for us to taste including a
,drink made from rhUbarb juice
with ginger-ale, added.also haw
jelly, These were quite palatable
especially the jelly made from the
hawthorn fruit (haws). To comp-
liment her talk slides were shown
of many of. the wild plants she
uses, for example, leeks,. sorrel,
elderberry, niarshmarigold, milk-
weed and many others. Her talk
left us with plent,' 'of food for
thought and experimentation in
the culinary net. •
Leaflets of her -triad recipes
were eagerly picked up from the
table. She brought along her
juicer, an item from Germany
which. she uses to extract rhubarb
juice..
Her recipe sheets contained
such recipes as Wild Leek cas-
serole, Sorrel' Salad, .Pickled
Asparagus. and others, one of our
nurses here copied out some of
the recipes, to. try. They really
appealed to her.
I was asked to judge the posters
which pupils from St. James and
Seaforth Public School made. It
was a pleasure to judat each .of
these very fine posters which
showed_ originality and a good
knowledge of their subject. It was
both a lesson in'Science and Art
to make these:I had them judged
ready to display in, he school and
the pupils were able to get their
prizes at the meeting and, some
pictures were taken of these
happy winners; The prizes could
be, shared-as all prizes were
