Common Weed Poisonous
To Livestock
Last. winter at a Logan township
crops meeting, Gordon Young
related an incidence of a
poisonous weed, He had lost a
cow from apparent feed
poisoning. The suspected plant
was leafy spurge.
Leafy spurge is a common
perennial weed in Perth County
and can cause serious livestock
problems. The milky sap may
cause inflammation and blistering
of the skin. When eaten, the
spurges are irritants and may
cause diarrhea and vomiting.
Swelling around the mouth and
eyes develops. Animals, feeding
for some time on small amounts
of infested hay, may eventually
Leafy spurge grows 3 ft. high
with smooth, branching stems
which contain a milky juice. The
plants are deep green to almost
bluish green during spring,
changing back to- dullish green
after flowering. The flowers are
yellowish._-green. The plant
blooms in June.
The control for spurge is spot
spraying with Cytrol when the
- weeds are in the' bud-to-bloom

Spot treat any regrowth.
Twitch Grass Still a Problem
A split application of Atrazine
is the best way to control twitch.
For severe infestations, 4 lbs. of
actual Atrazine plus 11/2 'gals. of
corn oil provides emergency
control. The use of corn oil during
cold, weather, or other stress
conditions' can set corn back.
Twitch grass tends to creep into
corn fields from fence rows.
Spraying a narrow grip of the
fence row will prevent twitch from
spreading into a clean field.
Bindweed Control in Corn
Bindweed can easily be con-
trolled when. it is in the flower
stage, Early stages of growth are
almost impossible to control. The
chemical to use is A mixture of 2,
4-D and Dicamba. Kil-mor is a
commercial mixture of these two
herbicides.
Corn is very sensitive to these
hericides and should not be
sprayed while the corn plants are
6, to •16 in. Tall (leaf extended).
Once the plants are 16 in. tall,
drop pipes_must_be used to
prevent herbicide from entering
the whorl of the corn plant. Do not
use 2, 4-D or Dicamba later than 2
weeks prior to silking and tas-
seling. For more information on
bindweed control, read pages 40
and of -Publication 75,-"Gliicle-to

Soil and Crop Bus Tour and
Twilight Meeting
council meeting on July 3.
Mrs. Badley resigned at the
last council meeting but
councillors declined to Accept it.
Also at the meeting landowners
on the east side of the centre
sideroad of Morris , Township
rejected the Maitland Engineer-
ing report on the Bluevale
Municipal Drain.
. Andy McBride from Mriitland
Engineering Services of
Wingfiam had recommended that
the drain go from behind the
houses on'the east side of .the
centre sideroad, cross 'through
the•-centre Sift-road through Lot_
30 'and drain into the Maitland
River.
Some owners rejected his
suggestion, some 'because they
didn't have any problems with
water coming into their
basements or any other problem
with water and some because
they thought another drainage
sytem would do just as well and
cost less.
Council had to reject the
engineer's report of ter some
landowners removed their names
from a petition for the drain that
pad been signed in 1976.
Council also beard.a letter from
the MTC regarding the flooding
of concession roads 2 and 3 on lots
5 and 6. MTC had gone along
with some of council's recommen-
dations but also made some
suggestions of their Own —Which
council felt weren't applicable to -
the situation.
Council decided to get 'the
engineering firm of. Burns-Ross
who had made the recommen-„
dations to talk to MTC about the
problem and ask them to comply
with council's resolution on it.
