Long befbre the Ivy Lea
Bridge spanned the St.
Lavirence River, a harness
horse crossed the river once
every week by ferryboat.
The horse was Canada
Grey Eagle, and while he
was known to be mean and
cantankerous, he was a sire
of good trotting horses and
made regular trips to Wad-
dington, N.Y. to breed mares
during the season.
Jesse Smith was in charge
of the horse and the weekly
trip gave him an opportunity
to visit with his fellow
passengers during the cross-
ing. One day, while he was
engaged in pleasant con-
versation and storytelling,
the stallion grabbed him and
threw him to the deck,
breaking his arm.
The ferryman and pas-
sengers wanted no part of
the demon horse. They drove
him off the deck of the ferry
into the strong current of the
St. LawrenCe River.
Canada Grey Eagle was a
resourceful, strong and
courageous horse. He swam
to nearby Clark's Island
where he roamed untilSmith
was able -to rescue him. He
was rafted to the Canadian
shore and • returned to his
home in Morrisburg, Ont.
The "Eagle" was a pion-
eer Canadian trotting stal-
lion and continued his stud
duties from those days of the
early 1850's to become the
sire of a tribe of good
carriage horses and racing
stock during the Golden Age
of road horses.

Murray "Moe" Hill, the new
racing secretary at the Clinton
Kinsmen Raceway, is no stranger
to harness racing.
In fact, Noe's new position at
the thrlying ,"B" track in Huron
County haS put him in front of tfie
horses for a change, instead of
underneath them.
For the last 10 years, Mae has
been a farrier,at nearly a dozen
tracks across Ontario, and has
seen the bottoms of literally
thousands of horses hooves in
these years.
Moe, 38, who is a native of the
..snialthjamlet _of_Var nu._ just a few -
miles south of Clinton, is well-
'known to hundreds of Ontario
harneSs horsemen, and has
worked as a keeper of horse shoes
at Windsor -Raceway, Western
Fair in London, Flamboro, as well
as a host of smaller "B" circuit
and fair tracks.
But all those years of horses
insttgated a couple of fights and
tried to intimidate the St.
Columban team with some ex-
tremely rough play.
However, St..
Columban stood up to the ehal-
leitge and played out ° the re- i
mainder of the game While
avoiding injury.

leaning on Moe while he tended
to their feet took its toll on his
back, and last year the doctor
ordered him to get into something
a little less strenuous,
This spring, Moe was invited
by theKinsmen Club-of Clinton to
try and get his racing secretary's
licence and, run the raceway,
