The Huron Expositor, 1978-06-22, Page 7Pet Peeves by Dr. Bob Friendship Worms and pets . •Readers...._Quesdhn , Do children_eatch Pinworms from cats and dogs? Answer: No ! Dogs and cats are completely blameless with regar'd to the spread of this parasite. Pinworms• tend to be spread. indirectly from one human to another. Dogs and eats are never infected by Pinworms. However, pets can play' a role -in other • Parasitic conditions involving humans and it is advised to monitor the feces of your pet, using, veterinary laboratory services. to detect any worm problems.. Round worms, 'hookworms and toxoplasma • organisms are-all -very common problenjs that do concern man. Round worms ,. are. very....prevatent., in young puppies and can cause a disease in humans called "Visceral Larva Migrans" if their eggs are ingested by humans in large enough numbers. This is usually only a: problem when there is a young child crawling on the floors and an untrained young pup in the same house. When there -is a youngster around, all dogs : should be wornied consistently for "round worms". "Round' worms" have been known to develop ' and migrate through the human body causing serious ' oonsequences if enough of their eggs have ben ingested by a • child playing in soil contaminated by dog feces. Likewise "hookworm" eggs passed in ':'; dogs feces can become an annoying problem in man: The disease in man is, called "Cutaneous larva migrans". The infective larva of "hookworms are capable of pentrating the skin and moving • along under the., skin causing intense itch ing ..:For this_reason dogs should no.t.he allowed,on beaches, because this-is where thp, discase occurs most frequently due 'to the prevalence of b.are feet. Hookworms area difficult.parasite to get rid of. It takes a special anthelmintic• to clear up an infection in dogs. • Another important. problem is Toxotildsmosis. This disease has gained a great deal., of publicity recently. This prOtozoan organism is capable of crossing the placental barrier and causing disease and malformation of the developing fetus. 'Abortion and birth defects' in htimans ha-S.4 caused an increased awareness on the part of the pet owner. Cats are responsible for-passing the:, organism via their feces to other mammals ',including man. Another way in which the disease is spread is by ingesting the contaminated meat of animals with Toxoplasmosis. The infection "is very common in doThestic animals in Ontario, Therefore pregnant women are advised to only eat meat that is properly , cooked and' .allow some one else to handle the cat's litter In conclusion, it should be pointed out that with proper hygiene and regular wormingg there should be no problems...of htiman disease as a result of cat and dog parasitism. In addition, cats and dogs in South Western Ontario.' are' of consequence in the spread of human tapeworm and pinworm infections.
