If you hear "me...chuckling over a daily
newspaper, I probably won't be reading the
funnies; I'll be studying the entries in the
-horse races.
I haven't come Upcwith a foolproof system of
picking winners. The times and other
statistics mean little to me. The commend of
racing experts, such as "Upsets ,On
Occasion," "Could Make Amends Hors,"4
"Threat to All" and "Ifs Possible," don't
inspire me to run out to the track to place my
bet.
What amuses me is the names of the
horses. I know ' horse racing is a serious
business, requiring hard work, dedication and
skill from owners, trainers, jockeys and
harness drivers.. When a foal is bOrn of, fine
breeding, he can't be given just any old name.
Sometimes the names of his parents-and even
his grandparents are combined to indicate the
lineage from which he descends.
' An example is Iron -Legend, a three-year old
scratched from the Preakness this year. His
' mother was Jtimy Legend, his father was Iron
Peg, and he had a sister called Jenny Spencer,
If an owner wants a unique name or a title
that may begin a new line or -racing
contenders, he must give it careful con-
sideration. His own character as well as the
personality of the 'horse may play a part in his
choice.
Having a race horse is a serious re-
sponsibility, but yOu can't convince me that
, whoever came up with names like "Cruising
Esther." "Streaking, March," "Whata
Baron" and "Scotch Cork," didn't have ,
mirks on their faces or empty bottles' in their.
hands.
A few years ago went to some races and
my imagination was captured by "The Thin
Man." He was aptly named boy, was he thin;
There was something, mysteriouS about him
for he always sleuthed along at,the back of the
pack. I don't remember seeing him win- a race
,or even finish in the money, but that, thin, dark
tiorse has a special place in my memory.
Recently I noticed in a newspaper that "The'
Long Boy" was entered in a race. Could he be
the son of "The Thin Man"?
The names of horses cover a broad range of
subjects. Food, for- instance, is described by
"Fast Bite," "Frosty Shirbert" and "Peach-

'The over Population of SoutliVestern
Ontario by dogs and cats is becoming a very
*serious'problem and one that should concern
every responsible pet owner. There is no
reason for the family pet to become pregnant
if the birth of puppies or kittens prove an
unwanted burden for the household. General-
ly speaking„ the-;raising and . distributing of •
puppies and kittens should be left to breeding
kennels. To avoid unwanted pregnancy, the
female pet, cat or dog, should be surgically
neutered before, she reaches 'breeding age.
Recently,. an oral contraceptive has been
developed for use with dogs. Although this.
has proved advantageous in controlling estrus
" in show and hunting dogs, it appears,' as yet,
economically unfeasible for the average family
pet; spaying, surgical removal of theqemale's
• reproductive organs, is still the best of the
limited number of birth control methods
offered' for the pet population.
Best Time
The optimal time for spaying a dog or cat is
between seven and 12 months of age, This'
operation, involves the removal of -the two
ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the uterus
through a midline incision in the Abdo-Men:If
the animal is in "heat" or pregnant, the
surgery is made more difficult due to
increased blood circulation to the area. As
with all m ajor abddtninal surgery, a degree of
- risk „iS involved. Infection is a possibility
'accompanying all major surgery but sterile
surgical technique and antibiotics minimize
this _complication ;

still in the making but yesterday'
there was anew character added
to the scene of action. I was
quickly alerted to this scene of
action. A local cat was showing an
interest in the blue jay's project.
It anchored itself in a tree 'nearby.
It was the same colour -as the
branches of the tree. I was unable
to locate it until .1 noticed it
'wagging its tail. The blue jays
had seen it and took exception to
it . being in their claimed area
where they had planned to raise.

years by procrastinating dog owners who try
to justify owning an unaltered pet. Certain
dog owners believe that a bitch will not be a
good pet unless she has at least one litter,of
pups.
'Secondly, there are those that insist that the
sp aying bite!) becomes fat and lazy. Science
has• proven both statements to be false.
Furthermore, it is over-eating and lack of
exercise that causes obesity' in most animals
and it is the direct responsibility of the pet
owner to prevent this from happening.
More Benefits
Besides- the obvious benefits of birth
control, neutering the female may also lower
the risk of breast cancek 'arid help prevent
wandering and the attraction of stray dogs.
Neutering the male dog has more limited
benefits. Unacceptable behaviour, such as
„wandering and fightling may bediminished by
early castration, however patience and proper
training tend to give more consistent results.
Male Cat
The -male cat, on the other hand, needs to
be castrated if one wished an acceptable
house pet. The uncastrated male cat, sprays
the furniture, fights with other "Tom" cats
and tends to reek with an offensive male
odour.
In conclusion it should be pointed out, that
there is a growing resentment by property
owners towards neglected pets that wander
freely through towns and county-sidet •
• The onus in on responsible pet owners to
have their animals neutered to help prevent
this wandering and to help fight this pet

was a hit song for Anne Murray a few years
ago, "The Dustman" Was . an old song that I
think came from England or Australia. YAI's

Al or it put Al to sleep. ,
Some names show a touch of class, such as
" .0. Countess,"' 'Sweet Regrets," "Alana
t" and "Royal Muddy." Others have a
of sentimentality: "Nancy's Smokey,"
"Laura's Dream," ",Bethany Promise" and
"Dream:Maker."
A few names make statements: "Pray for
Peace," "Skip for Joy," "Slippery A Nuff,"
"Believe ft" and "Oughta Bet." Some names
consist of one long Word, such as "Con-
templation," "Socialibility," "Nevekier."
"Niacinamide" and "Alydar," Others are
shortand to the point: "Snap," "Affirmed,"
"Eno" and "Geepers."
Raceway announcers are, in my opinion,
underrated. It takes, courage to stand in front •
of a microphone, for thousands of people to
hear, and spiel out a two-minute running
commentary, such as the following:
