These observations result from a study conducted in the depart- ment of environmental biology, University of Gttelph by Dennis Draper and Prof. J. B. Robinson.. The study shows that impreved. manure management and ap- plication practices on Ontario farms could significantly reduce the amount of phosphorus originating in manure that occurs in annual run-off. ' The major sources are storm andshow-melt run-off from open feedrats and outdoor manure storage, and the run-off from manure spread too close to water Reject county housin Pre-harvest sprouting, the bane of winter wheat growers, may soon yield to the scientists' efforts. Prof,. N.F. Derera, director of wheat breeding, University of Sydney, and Prof. L.A.Hunt, department of crop science. University of Guelph.," Brussels, and Morris and Grey Township councils held a special meeting in Brussels council chambers Monday night to dis- h uss their feelings on county a wide residency system fr senior o citizen's housing. Reeve Cal Kreuter. old the t other two councils that Brussels council had been told by re- presentatives of.the. Huron County Housing Authity that or Brussels was the only lace that p hadn't expressed its willingness to go with the county Sstem.. He told them that thiS year the deficit-on-the—Senior Citizens,. building was $6055.03. Reeve Bill Elston of Morris said, "I think it all boils down to. do you want them to run it?" Reeve Roy Williamson of Grey said they were satisfied with the way the Senior Citizen's Apart ment building is operating now and Reeve Elston said that Morris was happy with the arrangement too. Councillor Toni Pletch said, "If we stay the way we are, me still have a fighting chance of getting Brussels, Morris and Grey in." Reeve Cal Kreuter said, "we'd like to stay where we are but we don't want to stay onpur own. We' sure can't afford to run 'it on our own. We're quite willing to run it the way we are but we didn't want to be left holding the bag." Reeve Krauter asked the councillors of the two townhsips if they agreed that Brussels could report to the County ,Housing Authority that they intended to stay the way they were and both councils were agregable. , Councillor Ross Procter from Morris said "Generally I favor having control as close to the plough handle as you can get it." Brussels Councillor Malcolm . Jacobs said, "I don't-see how you could run it any better that. it is. It's full: Everybody seems to be happy with if," Brussels council also discussed, with Grey the flooding on Burgess Street-from-the-east to the west side. Reeve Roy Williamson said they would look at it and see what could be done. Morris and grey also agreed 'to the updated •fire agreements that assistant clerk ,Ruth Sauve had typed out. Brussels is going to cover fires in Graham's Sury y and out to the sales barn in Grey and will also be covering build ngs in ap- proximately the fi t mile and 4, quarter north f Brussels: Brussels is also going to supply water for Grey Township when they need it at no cost And one of , the Brussels utility men will start the pumps for Grey. All fire calls in the Township will come into Grey and then the Grey Fire Department will es:intact Brussels, Fire charges will -be, $150 for the first hour and $ is an hour atter that. The majority of the phosphorus *PIP livestock operations that enters the Great' Lakes water arises-- from-- -faulty management, according to a recent study at the University of Guelph. .The study found that over half the phosphorus originating in manure came from livestock operations that were located within 400 feet of an open' drainage channel. Another 20 per cent of the load came from spreading manure on frozen ground. The results hope to make some joint headway this summer in tackling the problem. Prof. Derera, who is spending a period as a visiting professor in crop science at the University of Guelph. has brought with him seeds from his breeding research at' INIrrabri in Australia. Australia's northern wheat growing area has extensiVe 'summer rainfall, and so sprouting has been- a, problem with white wheats there, just as in Ontario, - Since 1973-, Australian plant - breeders have discovered. that, a number of hereditary characteristics, including seed coat imposed dormancy, may (depending on conditions) protect' against sprouting damage, Laboratory back-crossing methods have successfully intro- duced these characteristics into previously susceptible varieties, and it. is expected that 'Australia will eventually be planting white wheat resistant to pre-harvest sprouting. In order to improve the situation around feedlots, the installation of berms, "broad grassed water ways, or retention ponds with clean water-diversions above the lots will be needed, according to Mr. Draper. Where winter spreading of manure cannot "be avoided, it Should be put on fields where an area of perennial vegetation lies between the stireaing area and stream courses, the report states. This' will ' greatly reduce- the amount of phosphorus _that reaches the stream. Overland flow of run-off water from barn yards and from field "spreading reduces the phosphorus load in proportion to distance. This is• the reason that feedlots: and winter spreading operations should be kept as far -.as possible from open ditches and water courses. The report also recommends_ further study of the problems resulting from allowing cattle access 'to streams dtiring summer. Preliminary estimates inch-ate that there is potential for a substantial amount of ----.,;phosphoruS in steams arising from this cause. In addition, the practice increases stream bank erosion, with the result that 7=- significant amounts of sediment and associated nutrients are carried away. t The cost effood marketing in Canada rose 47. per cent between 1961 and 1971.
