Some advice for new owner
e-new-deg-owner-may-be-eonfronted with---=scolded7However-, it-dues ao good-to punish
a variety of 'problems when he brings home a
puppy. House training, vaccinations, feeding
regimes and parasite controls are a few of the
important areas thht need to be dealt with by
the owner. However, a puppy should still be,
an enjoyable part of a family and Most
problems can be minimized by common sense ,
and observations. ,
To begin with the pup should usually be no
younger than six weeks old when taken from
its mother and placed in a new environment.
This environment should be warm, quiet, and
comfortable in order for him to adjust tq. his
new surroundings and owners most readily.
He should be fed moist pr semi-moist food
as frequently-as 4 or 5 times' a day And clean '
water should be freely available . After a few
weeks the number of feedings may be cut back
and a dry kibble type food may be introduced
gradually.
House training' should begin early. One
should take advantage of natural instincts that
trigger defecation defecation and urination
reflexes, such as eating, drinking and waking.
Inimediately after the pup wakes up or
immediately after' he eats, you should take
him outside and wait with him until he
finishes, and then you should praise him.
There should be a designated area of paper in
the hthise where the, puppy can- urinate.' When
the right area is used by the puppy lie should
be rewarded, and likeWise when he is caught
urinating in an improper area he should be
the dog if the mess is discovered long after it's
been done. He won't understand. House
training can ,be very difficult but try and be
consistent and patient.
Likewise you. will n eed patience, in .dealing
with_ a puppy's chewing habits. Supply him .
with a toy or a rawhide bone to chew on, and
hide ,slippers and running. shoes.
" During this first week that you own. your
puppy, he-should be taken to a veterinarian
for a checkup and vaccinations. He• should be
inoculated for Canine Disteinper and
Infectious Canine Hepatiti's because both are
common diseases that are fatal and
untreatable.‘At 3 - 4 months of age he may be
given a booster for Distemper-and Hepatitis as
well as a Rabies vaccination: At the time ,of
these primary vaccinations he should be given
a physical examination to detect genetic and
physical defects as well as early signs of
infectious disease. The puppy's stool should
also -be checked for 'worm eggs. Worms
commonly infest pups and can lead to diarrhea
and even death; so it's important to identify
the worms and treat for them.
It is Obvibus that a puppy is going to require
a lot of time and patience, but the product of
'this investment .is usually well. worth the
challenge .and effort.
