As the, cost' of hoSpitat care
increases, a , Huron County
organization offers people
qualified care in their own homes.
The organization is the Town
and County Homemakers which
-1Tas 41 members across the
county:
Salome C. Mallon, resident of
the Family Care Workers of
Ontario, :and Muriel Knight,
Vice-President, visited the local
organization last week to discuss
the upcoming Canadian Care In
the Home Conference, which will
be held• in...Ottayva next month,
The homemakers, an in-
dependent organization in Huron
County-, work with a number
ofhealth and, social agencies
including Family and Childrens•
Services. the Canadian Cancer
Society and Community and
Social Services, as well as with
individuals who contact he or-
ganization for help in, the home.
The organization's code or
ethics defines family care ,workers.
as those people who "help
maintain and preserve a' family
environment with skills in both
homemaking and personal ego-
when an individual's or family's
physcial or mental well-being is
threatened, disrupted or in the
process of rehabilitation."
The upcoming confernece,
which is jointly sponsored by the
Family Care VVorkers and the.
National Health and Welfare
ministry, will be attended• by a
number of Huron County hOme-
ropicers.
Local delegates are Jean
Young, Wingham, president of
the group; Nelly Retronella,
Clinton, developinent officer for
the To"wn and, Country Home-
makers; Wilma Bakel'aar,
Clinton, a homemaker; Beatrice
Storey, Seaforth, a homaker;
Anne Thompson, Wingria.Qy‘a
homemaker; Muriel Workman,
Clinton, homemAer; Estelle
Wise, Clinton, homemaker; and
Betty' Cardno, administrator of
the Seaforth Home-Care
Program, who ,is attending the
conference as an observer.
Bev Brown and Gerry
'Zurbrigg of ,the Energy con-
servation Centres, in Lucknow
and Goderich, presented. a series
of tips on conserving energy in
and around the home.
Miss Brown told the home-
makers the cost of fuel in Canada
is rising 12 per cent a year or
doubling every six years. ,
She said the government
realizes it can't legigate energy
saving, so 150 energy centres
have bar" set up . across the
country to educate the public in
cokserving energy and looking' at
alternative sources of energy.
Miss Brown said while Canada
has only seven per cent of the
world's population, it is using 30
rxr cent of the world's energy
resources, and studies have
shown, Canadians are wasting 50
per cent of the, energy they use.
Both speakers invited the
'homemakers to attend the various
seminars presented at the energy
centre and said th6 centres hope
to ogranize a bus tour of various
solar-heated barns and houses
yohr new pet should be from `six
to twelve weeks.of age. This is the
critical and formative stage in a
dog's life when. he will become
attached 'to' his owner and can be
most easily shaped. and molilded
to his 'new environment,
Choosing a breed, that is
compatible with your 'own
personality and• lifestyle iS most
important. All puppies are small,
cute, cuddly and appealing • ut
adult, dogs vary greatly in ,size,
temperament and likeability. The
advantage of buying a purebred
for a pet is simply that the adult's
outcome is more predictable.
Finally, when making yiiur choice
from a litter, choose the
-healthiest, lamest and,,, most
robust pup; smeller and weaket
puppies tend to be slower to•train
and more prone to disease, 0
In future columns, pet issues
will be dealt with in more detail.

before obtaining a canine
companion. Firstly; can you afford
one? Aside froM the initial
purchase price, there are the
costs of food, licensing, housing,
vaccinations and basic medical
expenses to be considered.
Obviously this list can constitute
quite a sizeable investment when
totalled over the years.
Healthy dcigs do demand large
spaces for exercise and pfay; if
you live in a small apartment or a
house without a yard, a dog 'may
not tie the ideal -choice..—A
ambled dog, especially one
nd rambunctious, may
avoc. Such behaviour may
dire the establishment of a
owner-pet relationship.
e, you should consider
uch -available- time you
have for training and socializing
your dog.• The purchase of your
pet should be postponed until you
are sure you can afford this, time,
So, if_ you've decided upon a
dog, the question then becomes
one of which type to choose. Since
there is always a surplus of dogs,

PRIDE OF CANADA SLICED PREPARED • Oh you shouldn't have!
Scene I: There it sits on the breakfast table or under
the tree or in the hands of the presenter at the •retire-
merit party.. It's beatitiftil '- that acre of brightly
coloured paper and those tricky boWs'ofribben; and inside
there's usually. a box ; and inside the box there's probablY
scads of tissue paper, and inside that perhaps a plastic bag —
and there at last, like the cmysterions idol in the inner
sanctum of the temple, sits the gift itself. "Oh•," she (he)
cries, "you shouldn't have !" —
Scene II (a little later):. There sits, probably scre• wed
up into a handy ball now — the bright wrapper, the ribbon,
the tissue; the plastic bag, with the flattened box inside it —
=already forgotten in the garbage can. But who's„Saying "Oh,
you shouldn't have!" now?
It's a shafne to spoil the party 'by talking' about waste.
But does it really spoil the party? Or-have, we been oversold
on the need to impress each other with all the tinsel, when
what counts is the gift inside and the' affection that' it
•, represents?, , •
Mayle we don't want to go so far as trying• to hold , •
• unwramed gifts behind our backsurftil the last second, or
telling auntie to look tinder the chesterfield for a surprise.
But surely we could do 'a bit lesS wrapping without making
life, unbearably dull; and then make sure that the wrapping,
after its brief•but merry life, doesn't go into the municipal._
incinerator.
Of course, we're up against some pretty strong forces.
This' is the age of . super-packaging. It's not eagjt to buy'
anything, 'even small items like make-up or, razor blades,
• without bringing home .(and paying for) some eye-catching
display eatd 'or' mount or container that we usually have no
earthly use for. Prepared foods and. household products are
particularly striking examples of packaging gone%wild',
because 'they're competing with, one another on super.
market shelves. And we all know where the fancy package
ends up. •
Does it really matter? 'Unfortunately it does, because
• thisiS how we throw away money, resources and energy —
none 'of -which we earl afford to lose — on essentially trivial
purposes. The money and resources are obvious, but the
energy waste is something we don't;see:.it's the energy used
in produding and transporting the paper and plastic and
wood and metal and glass that are quickly di carded and.
disappear with a crunch into• the jaws of the garbage truck.
And' speaking of garbage trucks, they run on energy toe,
and's° do the landfill and incinerator operations that the
trucks feed. - . . - -
This isn't peanuts. More than one-third ,of the garbage
. coming from Canadian homes is packaging material, and it's •
getting worse.
One thing we can do to slow', the pace of destruction is
to buy things that come without„a lot of built-in garbage.
We can shop. at places where they pack goods in simple bags
or reusable containers. We can set aside the materials, like
paper. and glass, that can be recycled. We can put pressure
on local authorities to have these ' materials collected
separately; if they are not doing so already. And we can
keep a closer watch on our,own wrapping habits.
There are so many ways to fight back, and the best way
to start is by reading The garbage book, obtainable from
Box 3500, Station C, Ottawa, Ontario, K I Y 401. 'It's full
' of good, down-to-earth ideas frorri the Office of Energy •
Conservation. •
