seemed to turn pale at the unex-

from their bewilderment .till they
received our letter, which- had been
delayed two days on the road. We
went through Ptumpers Pass, (in the
Gulf), about sunset, and I never be --
fore realized how beautiful it is. We
stayed nn deck a long time watching
the varying tints of sky, mountain
and water,
The Islands are hills rising out of

8ett1ements. . We stopped at one or
two landings here. This is said to
lie one of the finest pieces of scenery
in the world ; net awe inspiring, but
just sweet and peaceful. We reach
Victoria, at 11 p. tn., secure a state-
rooni, and remain on board all night.
Next day we went through the Par-
liament Buildings and the museum,
-and then out to Esquirnoult, where
we went to see .the -naval, yard
and. saw the. :dry. ' clocks, '1111' of
which was very interesting; then
taking a Fort streetcar we passed
,Dunsnmier's Castle; a monument
both of the skill and frailty of man.
After tea, with our friends, we
went • to the San Francisco boat,
which was already well filled, and
were told that there was not a state-
room to be had. But after seeing
the Captain he told the Purser to
sell us a first class ticket, and a
berth was soeured for us. Oar
friends came on board with us and
we took a look through the boat to-
gether. But it is 8:30, time for our

told that we would enter the Golden
Gate at 7 a. m. The mountains here
looked very unlike those of British
Columbia. The mountains in British
Columbia are green, but these were
almost entirely barren. and very yel-
low. They were very pretty though.
We did not see the .city till we
passed through the Gate and into the
bay. There we caw a city built on
many hills. San .'rauciseo is on the
south side of the bay of the same
narne, Oakland, Alameda, Berkly,
&e., being on the north side of the
bay, I am rather dilapitated, but
not sick, and had the trip lasted
another day I could have clone full
justice to the fare, which, however,
is inferior to that on the C. P. R.
boats on the Great Lakes. We ar-
rived at the wharf at 7:30, before
breakfast, but could not get off the
boat till 8 o'clock. All the passen-
gers had to 'place their valises on
tables on the wharf to be examined
by the customs putting their hands
down one end of the valise and
up the other. That over, we pass
through the waiting room, where
stand the hackman on the alert for
passengers. We had no trunk, only
valises;and replied to the expressmen
who offered their services, that we
were going to take street car.
Pretty soon a bus driver offered to
take lite and my valises to the,
car, ea it was a walk of two or three
blocks, and he was going there any-
way, " It won't cost you nothin'"
So I got into the bus and we drove
to " ll he Ferries." . Then he carried
my valise& and put me on the
car, and it did not"cost me nothin'."
I got off at P' street and soon
found the house of my friend, who
met me looking the model of good
health and good nature. I noticed
in the room a cabinet bed that folded
up in the day time. :' That bed,"
said my friend, "will be a piano when
we return."• .Thus our modern furni-
ture can be adapted to circum-
stances. After breakfast we ar-
ranged with other friends to visit
Golden Gate" Park that day. We
took the car for the Park and rode
at least nn hour before reaching it.

Miss Anna A. Pioway, of Eden, Ont.,
says that she suVerctl from Catarrh for
ten years. used a number of remedies
advertised, but was always disappointed
in the result.
Last fall she snfferrcl intense pain in
her head and her throat was lintel with
uloers. The doctors called it Catarrhal
Sore Throat, lint did not cure it. She
saw that Dr. Chase's Catarrh Cure was

Soon the ulcers clearedfrom away from her
throat, the pain in her head ceased. She
