I am writing. my trilumn this
week on Monday just in case
someone would, be brave enough
to be going out and I could send
this along to the ExPositor Office.
Usually, (like everything else) I
put it off until the lalt minute and
so far haVe been fortunate (if that
is the right word). "What a
difference a day makes",
Yesterday it was raining, towards
,eve it started getting colder,
today the blowing snow reduces
visibility to alnicist nil and at
times reminds me 'of last .neat.
We_ moved from the farm Dec.
28th, 1976 and the next day and '•
several thereafter it created the ,
greatest snow problems we
experienced for many years. Most
of us will be talking arid thinking
about that for ,some time;
hoWever, I. am optimistic enough
to say that call this another
ball game. Remember .I had said a
few weeks ago to expect rain and.•
freezing rain, that is the,•
question? You will have to admit I :,
was partially right although that
is understandable as well.
I understand that we had
Several cancellations as to visitors
here on the weekend. Looks like
everyone stayed put. Sotne boys
-took advantage of the, weather to
get an outdoor rink started. Had it
Columban
been a' few 'years previous, I
would have enjoyed that as well,
Last week —r. had several local'
callers to spend a few hours visit
with 'me, among 'whom were
Wilfred and Mary Maloney and
his son Steve and his wife from
Kitchener. Steve recalled the old
days when I thresked for his
father when he was pre-school
age. I remember too when'he was
a star player fpr my St. Columban
hockey tear,cotnpeting in the
Seaforth Industrial Hock y
League. It is's great to see his on
Dave a star with New York
Rangers as is his son Don 17,
with Kitchener Junior
Rangers,. Although onlY—a. short
stay, we enjoyed the visit very
much.
Mr. andlArs. Mike Coyne were
honoured Saturday evening last
week• ,when friends and
inimediate "neighbours spent a
• very pleasant' evening, at their
,,home prior 'to their moving to
-their new residence in Seaforth.
The evening was• spent playing
cards and dancing Pfterwards and
an excellent address was read and
,t hey were presented with a hand
painted picture as best wishes for
continued health and happiness
in their new home. To add my
personal advice, Mike, stay away
from the race track.
Members of Hibbert Council
expressed...concern at the January
' Meeting about the extent to which
snow, removal costs 'in 1977 had
drained„,„ available furktis thus
yreducitirdonstruction on roads.
As a means of bringing the
construction program back in,line
during 1978, council agreed,' to
forego Placing gravel on the roads
which were in good condition, and
-spend- the money thus saved 4n
building up extra roads. The
decision on which reads to "build
up" was left to later• in the year:
Salaries for members of council
Will ' remain_ as in 1977; but
increases for extra meetings were
agreed on.'For day medihigs the
increase is from $40 to $45 and for
half day meetings from $25 to
'$30. Mileage is increased from 19
cents per mile to 21 cents per
mile. The Sanitary landfill
operator and the clerk were given
raises of 7.7% and .5.74%
respectively.
A delegation was received
concerning the planting of trees
for effective wind breaks, thus
increasing the heat units reaching
crops. Council had no objection to
breaks along road allowance-5, as
long as road allpwances were not
infringed on. They would prefer
' hard woods, but evergreens
would be permitted provided the
lower lim'Ss were „reumed to
avoid. snow accumulation on
roads. It was suggested to the
delegation .that "a "good neigh-,
bour" policy be employed along
lot lines. Deputy Reeve Harburn
explained that planting facilities
were available from the Ausable
BayfieldiConservation Authority.
The yearly grant of $125.00 was
made to the ,Salvation Army, and
road accounts 'in the sum . of
$10,345.67 were approved.
General accounts for $13,572.67
which included a tile drainage
roan of $9,000. were approved.
Council (ejected the concept of
a county wide plumbing

agree in principle on a Mitchell
