AVE A TOADSTOOL MRS, BL iCl LOCt>;, TORONTO, THOUGHT IT WAS A MUSHROOM, HUT IT WASN'T, ,TOUN CABOT. OUR IIUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS LANDING IN AMERICA COMMEMOR- ATED AT HALIFAX, Mrs, I3laeklock, an elderly woman living with her manic daughter, I►irs, J, Dane, is fond of mushrooms and her tastes in this direction led her to prepare a large mushroom, gathered on the bunks of Riversdale Parer. There are many mushrooms there, and Mrs. Blackrock thought hors was all right. It wasn't. Shortly after dinner Mrs Blacklock was seized with violent pains, and it was at once occurred to her that she had eaten a toadstool. Assistance was hastily procured, a stomach pump applied, and everything done to prevent the poison from going too far. Mrs. Blacklock's condition last evening was regarded as serious, but is now improving. Strange to say, her daughter had a similar experi- ence last summer. can have thein on short notice and at lowest possible prices. The Goverhor General on Thurs- day afternoon unveiled the tablet erected in the province building cor- ridor to the memory of John Cabot at Halifax, to mark the four hund- redth anniversary of the great navi- gator's landing on the American continent. The exercises took place in the open air in front of the province building, and were witnessed by a large gathering of people inside and outside the square. Four hundred `nen from the flagship `crescent' formed a guard of honor. Accom- panied by the ships' band and draw• ing four guns they marched through the streets from the dock yard, arriving at the building at 3 o'clock. Besides the speech by Lord Aberdeen the principal address was delivered by Archbishop O'Brien, retiring president of the Royal Society of Canada. Two Bottles Cure Pimples. The agit atlon of the subject in the past few years, has done much good. ;herr who do not observe the Sabbath day as a day holy t3, the Lord seek the preservation of the day of rest as for all the higher and better interests of men. Legislation does not direct- ly recognize the day in its truechar- acter as a day of religious worship but as a day so regarded by a large part of the people and as necessary foe the general welfare of the people It is undoubtedly true that with the increase of wealth and luxury, there has been a growing tendency to undervalue and neglect the religious observance of the Lord's day, on the part of many who call themselves Clhristains, but it is also true that there is a growing demand for the protection of the day of rest. Wage earneas recognize its valve, and claim the right to its enjoyment. Some of the principal asspciations have so declared, and give their in- fluence for proteciive legislation. The laws in nearly every stage give the day of rest a good measure of pro teetion, and need only to be wiser f enforced by the presence of a soend public sentiment. The changes that have been made in the laws are on the lines of greater effectiveness. We advocate the Sabbath as tate Lord's holy day given fur man, but we are glad of support from every qurrter even if it does not come up, to our own standard. Farm Notes.
