A Flood Caused by a Muskrat. •
A muskrat dug a hole in the bank
of the canal about a mile above Nash.

Rocking Accident at St Thomas,

Thomas Saturday night, whereby Hugh
Gilmour, a switehmsn, lost his life.
The yard engine was shunting cars,

step of the tender, when a sudden jar
cautted him to lose his footing and he

fore the engine could be stopped.

that it was a shocking sight and sick-

• A Tug Lost.
The tug Orient, which left Toledo
soaSetiine a week ago Monday, bound
up, Sank with all nnoaretin the atom
of 'Monday morning. The Orient was
owned' by Dial 'keels,' her captain and
John David, her first engineer. Ed.
Kane, of Port Larnbton, was mate,
Lawrence Pangborn second engineer,
Robert Boenaw fireman, and Joaeph/
Shorkey Stewart, all of Marine qty.
The foundering of the tug Orient was
witnessed by severe' vessels detained
by the storm near Point wa Pelee, but
the waves were so angry that. they
could not render any assistance. After
struggling vainly in their efforts to free
the Orient of the water which poured
into and over her, the entire crew were
carried to the bottom of the lake with
her final plunge.
Work or Bread.
Two hundred of the poor, homeless,
unemployod persons, who sleep at night
in Trafalgar Square, London, England,
Saturday paraded in a body through
the principal streets in the West End.
They carried v. black banner bearing
in white letters the inscription; "We
Will nave Work or Bread." A large
force of police, mounted and on foot,
accompanied the procession, which
eventually returned to Trafalgar Square
and. with the followers attracted, held
a meeting. The orators who address-
ed this assemblage described the hard-
ship of the lot of those **hose only
resting place in London was a public
square, and declared that •the oaly
means they had of drawing the atten-
tion of the public to their condition
was by such demonstrations as they
had just made. The meeting adopted
a resolution to reaesemble„in the same
place on Monday, and cohtinue to par-
ade daily until relief was afforded.

James Moore who was convicted of
manslaughter arising out of the Dres-
den sbooting affray, at the Kent Assiz-
es, has been sentenced to five years in
the penitentiary.
The Customs department have seia:

Mr. Wm. Watts, Thamesville, last
week pleaded guilty to a second offence
against the Scott Act and was fined
$100. In Dresden, Arthur Render -
sop pleaded guilty to a first offence aud
was fined $50, and John Hart was con-
victed of a second offence and fined
$100.
Mr. Robert McGowan, of the Kip -
pen road, Tuckersmith, sold to an
American buyer last week, two of his
Shetland ponies for $180. He also.
sold to the aame gentleman his import.
ed Clydesdale mare, for which he re-
ceived the sum of $215. About two
years ago Mr. McGowan imported from
Scotland six Shetland ponies and two
Clydesdale mares, and he has now sold
them all at good prices.
Mr. A. Govenlock, of Winthrop, had
a valuable mare killed by lightning a
few weeks ago. It was found dead in
the field. The lightning struck the an-
imal on the hinder parte and death
must have been instantaneous.
