Speaking on the Budget in the Legislature on Tuesday Mr. Darrow took up the charge against the Gov- ernment, of extravagance. This he said was "relative term. If we were getting what we paid for there could be no extravagance. Ontario was a province that could afford to pay for a good Government and the ques- tion was had it a good Government. No country in the world had a more efficient or impaial administration of j ustice; On ata public institutions were not excelled anywhere nor were they conducted anywhere at a less average cost. Ontario was not over - governed; in alt the Departments of Government the cost was reasonable The principles enumerated on the other side of the House were in main admirable but when those gentlemen carne co apply their principles it was difficult to tind them. Col. Matheson had made an e;ccellent speech with material at his had but the had said nothing that the Rouse had not list- ened to over and over again for years TLe charge was that the Government has been dissipating the capital of the of the province and appointing its friends to unnecessary offices. The Government had kept itself free from financial entanglements; - it bad no debt and not interest charge. True there were $2,000,000 of outstand- ing railway certificates but against these a ere 01,000,000 of assets. If these obligations were to he met to- morrow less than it dollar a head on the province would meet them. The opposition cried out about the Gov- ernment heelers and leeches sucking the lifeblood out of the province. Why did they not get down to par. tioulahs and name the heelers and leeches' Mr. (Yarrow said that he believed in retrenchtnent, but he also believed in governing the Province properly. The finances bad been honestly and carefully managed. The import- ance of having the names of all these placed on the roll cannot be 'over- estimated. A personal application to the assessor, followed up, if necessary by an affidavit in the proper form, will cause him to place all thes, names on his roll. It is the duty of the assessor to place on the roll all persons qualified as voters without requiring theta to make any affidavit whatever. WEST WAWANOSH. Mr. R.• Roach, of Brussels the well known horse man, now has in train- ing for the races in the spring the following string of trotters,' Maple Leat, 2:19?, ; Reddy, 2 :191; Steel Hal, -2:241; llockaways, 2:291 ; and O'Donnell, a green horse, but very fast. This is one of the finest strings of trotters in Qntario and Mr. Roach is just the man to make them show up the best, as there are few drivers on the turf n ho can handle a horse as well as lie can.
