He had been around the house up till Friday but had pot been able to speak from Tuesday on account of his throat. Friday evening he had a change for the worse, unci on Saturday his condition a as such as to cause alarm. Additional medical asaistance was sum- moned and a consultation was held, but nothing could be done to save his Life. He continued to grow weaker until a little be - ;ore midnight he slept peacefully away. The im''tn�j.diate pause of death was heart- failure,lill Mr. Dawson was born iu A.ber- deenshire, Scotland, in the year 1843. He was a tailor by trade and served ninny years both in Scotland and in C.tuade in that business. Iu 1864 he married Annie Falconer, who with nine ,children is left to mourn his sudden death. lu 1864 he carte to Canada, and having brothers in Huron he came direct to \Vinghein. He after- wards lived in Goderich Cooketuwu and Toronto. In the latter place he was in the employ of W. A, Murray. Twenty-six years ago he returned to Wingham, euter- e,t into bwiness, which he abandoned 801110 years ago to accept the general agency uf the Ottrai,t Mutual Ineuranoe Co. He was an elder for many years having been ordained to that position exactly fourteen years previous to the day of his death. Of hia children the eldest is Mrs. J. G. Ward, of town; .Mrs. J, T. McLeod and Eva, live in Toronto, Falconer in George- town and the rest are at home. The deep- est sympathy of the whole community is felt for alis. Dawson and the family in this their irreparable. loss, The Saubttth School and the members 011 the Young Peoples Society each sent beauti- ful floral offerings. The pall -bearers wore Messrs, McLean, Sutherland, McIntyre, Dttyia Gorden and l3rockenshire. The members of the Council turned out in a body and marched In tete processiou, and the funeral was one of the largest that hits been in the town for some time. Town Council. Council meeting was held on Monday evening with the Mayor iu the Chair. Councillors present: Angus, McKinley, Johns, Reading, Rubinson, Forbes, Rob- bins, Shaw, Hanson, Gregory. Minutes of the last regular meeting and special meeting were read and approved. A communication was read from the Hamilton Good !toad, Machinery Co.; re- ferred to Public Works Committee. From R. Vanstone tendering his resigna- tion as Auditor for the town of Wingham for 1897. Hanson—Shaw—That resignation of R. Vanstone be accepted—Carried. Treasurer's report was read and received. The Auditor's supplemental report was read. Robinson—Forbes--That the Auditor's report of accounts for 1896 be accepted— Carried. Robbins—Shaw—That the supplemental report of the Auditors be accepted and that each auditor receive 55 tor additional services—Carried. Section 2 of this by-law provides that the 'Treasurer shall open an account in the name of the municipality. in the Bank of Hamilton and shall deposit all moneys received by kiln to the credit of such account. Section 3 provides that no money shall be drawn therefrom, other than by resolu- tion of the Connell and upon a cheque signed by the Treasurer and Mayor, coun- tersigned by the clerk and having the seat of the corporation attached thereto, speci- fying the amount to be paid.; the person to whole order the same is to be paid; for what paid and the date when payment thereof was ordered by the Council. Section 5, provides that tate clerk shall )seep at his office the counterfoil of every cheque issued, cud suvlt counterfoil terfoil shall contain the number of the cheque corres- ponding thereto; the name of tate version .to whose order the cheque ie issued ; the object, the amount and ditto and shall be signed by the Mayor and Treasurer, Section 6 provides that the Collector shall deposit to the credit of the said account at least once a week until the final return of the Csllector'a roti, the total 1 amount of taxes in his hands at the time of making such depusit. Cornmittee reported in favor of J. B. Ferguson. The Mayor took the chair and a bylaw was duly passed appointing Mr. Ferguson treasurer at a salary of 5190 per annum.
