tion of Chas. Lloyd, third son of lir. Chas.

accident on Sunday afternoon. As be was

—A load of young people drove to Luck -
now Tuesday evening to attend the carni-
val. R. McGregor captured two of the
prizes offered. On the home trip the sleigh
was capsized near Zstland 'and the team
broke away from the sleigh and came home
by their lonesome, The walking from
Zetland in, was excellent,
4 -The members of the 1. 0.F. and their
friends had a box sortie! on Thursday even-
ing last when a very enjoyable evening wa■
spent. Mr. Cameron, of Lucknow, was
present and delivered an excellent address
on the workings of the order and the bene.

hotel to get his horse when be noticed a
blaze in the closet. A pail of water put it

alarm sounded and the report quickly
spread that the Union Factory VMS on
tiro. The fire originates over the boiler in
the engine house and had b trned several

applause.
The trustees of the Methodist church,

TO THE TOWS.
Tins week we have to record the death of
one of \Vteghani'a most highly respected
citizens. About ten days ago Mr. Alto
Dawson was laid up with r ii attack of
quinsy, bet as he was esubjeot to these at-

around the house up till Friday but had
pot been able to speak from Tuesday on
account of his throat. Friday evening he had
a change for the worse, unci on Saturday
his condition a as such as to cause alarm.
Additional medical asaistance was sum-
moned and a consultation was held, but
nothing could be done to save his Life. He
continued to grow weaker until a little be -
;ore midnight he slept peacefully away.
The im''tn�j.diate pause of death was heart-
failure,lill Mr. Dawson was born iu A.ber-
deenshire, Scotland, in the year 1843. He
was a tailor by trade and served ninny
years both in Scotland and in C.tuade in
that business. Iu 1864 he married Annie
Falconer, who with nine ,children is left to
mourn his sudden death. lu 1864 he carte
to Canada, and having brothers in Huron
he came direct to \Vinghein. He after-
wards lived in Goderich Cooketuwu
and Toronto. In the latter place he was in
the employ of W. A, Murray. Twenty-six
years ago he returned to Wingham, euter-
e,t into bwiness, which he abandoned 801110
years ago to accept the general agency uf
the Ottrai,t Mutual Ineuranoe Co.
He always took a lively interest in the
welfare of the ton u, and for twelve years
out at the Council beard, IIe w ntefearlese

At the time or his tlt'miae he was a
teacher in. the Presbyteti,u Sub(,.. '' Gnhnol
mud a member of the Beard of manageme,.e
of the Presbyterian church. He was an
elder for many years having been ordained
to that position exactly fourteen years
previous to the day of his death.
Of hia children the eldest is Mrs. J. G.
Ward, of town; .Mrs. J, T. McLeod and
Eva, live in Toronto, Falconer in George-
town and the rest are at home. The deep-
est sympathy of the whole community is
felt for alis. Dawson and the family in this
their irreparable. loss,
The Saubttth School and the members 011
the Young Peoples Society each sent beauti-
ful floral offerings. The pall -bearers wore
Messrs, McLean, Sutherland, McIntyre,
Dttyia Gorden and l3rockenshire. The
members of the Council turned out in a
body and marched In tete processiou, and
the funeral was one of the largest that hits
been in the town for some time.
Town Council.
Council meeting was held on Monday
evening with the Mayor iu the Chair.
Councillors present: Angus, McKinley,
Johns, Reading, Rubinson, Forbes, Rob-
bins, Shaw, Hanson, Gregory.
Minutes of the last regular meeting and
special meeting were read and approved.
A communication was read from the
Hamilton Good !toad, Machinery Co.; re-
ferred to Public Works Committee.

13y.law 2197, 1897, to regulate the keeping
of the moneys of the town of 1Vinghatn,
was read and on motion adopted.
Section 2 of this by-law provides that
the 'Treasurer shall open an account in the
name of the municipality. in the Bank of
Hamilton and shall deposit all moneys
received by kiln to the credit of such
account.
Section 3 provides that no money shall
be drawn therefrom, other than by resolu-
tion of the Connell and upon a cheque
signed by the Treasurer and Mayor, coun-
tersigned by the clerk and having the seat
of the corporation attached thereto, speci-
fying the amount to be paid.; the person to
whole order the same is to be paid; for
what paid and the date when payment
thereof was ordered by the Council.
Section 5, provides that tate clerk shall
)seep at his office the counterfoil of every
cheque issued, cud suvlt counterfoil terfoil shall
contain the number of the cheque corres-
ponding thereto; the name of tate version .to
whose order the cheque ie issued ; the
object, the amount and ditto and shall be
signed by the Mayor and Treasurer,
Section 6 provides that the Collector
shall deposit to the credit of the said
account at least once a week until the final
return of the Csllector'a roti, the total 1
amount of taxes in his hands at the time
of making such depusit.
Applications for the uftice of 'Treasurer

the appointment of Treasurer, with Deputy-
Reeye Angus in tbe chair.

The Mayor took the chair and a bylaw
